Okay I have been thinking about this for a while now. I think we need to setup a project to try and squash the mag restrictions on the SKS.

If you compare the SKS with the M1 Garand both have fixed capacities using stripper clips for loading. The Garand can be made to fire 5 rounds only using a special blocked clip but it still got 5 round limit exemption. The collector value on the surplus SKS is ruined as soon as they are butchered by the welded follower or mag cover.

Since the SKS is about to become the Enfield of Red Rfles in Canada thanks to all the Russian surplus and the HUGE shipment that johnone has coming, it may be worthwhile to explore.

What say you?

You want to take a (somewhat) AK look-alike (per public and media perception), and un-regulate mag capacity?

When you sell that idea to the general public in question, let us know.

Classifying a rifle by the looks how very Liberal...If that is the logic I want all bolt action rifles with black stocks immediately classified as restricted, the black color scares me...

The CPC is smart enough to not throw away urban votes, which is essentially what would happen. Our man Harper committed to nothing other than killing the universally-hated registry, and nothing else. Trust me, he is a principled man that absolutely hates to go back on his words.

I can guarantee you that the MSM will show the SKS with the detachable mag, if they can even sort that out (instead of posting a standard AK-47 'stock' photo ).

You can NEVER sell logic to an urban liberal.

that will be very very difficult to sell to others. firemachine69 is merely stating the fact that the liberal media will perceive the SKS as too scary looking. If you succeed, I will be very impressed :)

I realise that the M1 is an enbloc clip, my point is that it has a fixed capacity.

I am just trying to make a point.

Sometimes when you present the government with a logical arguement change can happen. Look at the 10 round pistol mags being sold for AR's. You use the governments logic against them.

If the case for the M1 exemption is that is was designed for an 8 round enbloc clip and can't be permanently limted. The same logic should hold up for the SKS, fixed magazine rifle designed for 10 rounds only that can't be permanently limited to 5 rounds.

Here is another point, welding a plug on the mag cover of an SKS is actually the worse way to "limit" the capacity. Welding a rod on the follower is not much better as the rod is easily cut off or the follower replaced. So if the SKS mag can not be permanently modified it should be exempted just like the Garand.

By the way you can buy SKS mag covers in Canada that are not modified as it is NOT the Magazine on the sks.

The Garand dose NOT have a fixed mag . It is a enblock CLIP

I guess you are right but man it is crazy that I can take my Garand out to play at the range using 8 round enblocs and my SKS is nutured to 5 by some knob with a Canadian tire welder...

Well I guess we <could> push for an OIC under the auspices of wanting to "normalize" firearm magazine capacities to 10 rounds across the board, regardless of their classification .... BUT governments being what they are, this would probably mean the end of the exemptions for rimfires and belt-feds .... Not sure I'm willing to risk that ...

I would think it would be easier publicity-wise to get the dates and characteristics needed for antiques changed. Say 1950. :D
No mag restrictions if it is not a firearm in the law :D

I think sometime down the road Canada will adopt a 10 shot mag rule for all semi auto's, just like the US had when the Assault weapons ban was in affect federally, and some states still have in law.

The exception to the rule for Garands is because:

a) at the time they were widely owned and used for hunting
b) it is impossible to modify them easily to make them only hold 5 rounds because of the design of the firearm.

SKS's CAN be easily modified. Hence, the two are not comparable I'm afraid.
