What kind of difference in performance can be expected with the addition of a 10" barrel? Specifically velocity and energy. Is the recoil affected in any noticeable way? Looking mainly at commercial 300 grain but any info is appreciated.

Have you seen the D.E. with the 10inch??.......looks like ####! it doesn't have the traditional triangle barrel.

Stay with the 6inch, there probaly wouldn't be much of a difference anyway...especially in a hand-cannon like a D.E. .50AE.

I have and keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder;) The only thing I don't like is the ridiculous length of the thing with the 10". The main reason for consideration is the extreme muzzle flash I get off the .50. When I go back home I will be shooting in an indoor range and I average half a box before my head can't take anymore.

Start lifting weights or somethibng of that nature. A 6" is plenty heavy for me.... can't imagine 25 rounds of slow-fire thru a 10" barrel....... the eveil things people do to their bodies! :runaway:

Regards,

the 10" barrel ain't gonna help that much, if the overpressue is making you sinus's drain, maybe drop back to pipsqueak .44 mag:dancingbanana:

Go with the 44 magnum if you have a problem indoors. It would be cheaper to shoot as well. I can't see why you would be interested in more performance indoors anyway. Unless the range has a backstop that can handle centerfire rifle you might find that you may be told not to shoot it indoors.

I would think recoil would be increased a little. If there was more energy in the bullet going down range then there is more going back to you. I have a S&W 44 magnum with a 10" barrel. I find that with some loads the recoil comes back (rather than up) right into my wrist. Of course this won't feel as bad if you shoot with two hands. While I don't think the 10" barrel will add significantly to the weight of the gun it would still move the balance forward.

As far as muzzle flash indoors. I'm sure it would be reduced a little but I don't think there would be a significant decrease. Are you sure you will be able to shoot much indoors? A lot of clubs would tolerate for only a little while. (after everyone had a chance to shoot it) If flash is a problem then wear some sun glasses. And don't forget the black trench coat.

When I was a member of an indoor range I would double up on the hearing protection. Soft plugs under muffs. That seemed to help a lot, especially when shooting louder guns. I know my .357 Black hawk see med way louder than my .45auto in there. I think this was because of the gasses (sound) coming out of the cylinder gap and bouncing off of the partitions between each shooting lane.

As far as the barrel length. It doesn't sound like you would be doing it for the looks, but more for function.
If you hand load for it you can somewhat control the flash, or at least pick a load that you can live with.

The 357 is much louder than the .45acp because its nerly double the preasure! Drop some light target .38's in there and it will be similar to the .45.

I would say unless your going hunting, or wanting to get better groups I would just stick to the 6" I don't think you would get much less blast out of the 10" vs 6" indoors.

I guess I will be spending my money on a .44 kit instead of a 10" barrel. I am not looking for more performance indoors, just wondering what the difference would be. Thanks for the replies:) .

Since no-one is actually answering you, I ran some numbers through quickload.

50AE:
300 speer, H110, 6" = 1426fps / 8957 psi at muzzle / 23.5ft-lbs of recoil
300 speer, H110, 10" = 1636fps / 5168 psi / 23.7ft-lbs

44Mag:
240 speer, H110, 6" = 1432fps / 9562psi / 15.7ft-lbs

I don't know what commercial ammo uses, but it will be close to H110 in performance.

You can see that the 10" will have substantially less muzzle blast, due to the lower pressure. Recoil is about the same - the heavier barrel takes care of that.

Note that .44 is just as 'loud'. There is less total gas, however, which makes the .50 feel more concussive.

For either round, earplugs + muffs are the way to go indoors.

Thanks a lot, your numbers for 6" are pretty close to the given numbers for commercial so I think your pretty much bang on. I know what you mean about noise, but it's the concussion that gets me. I still think the .44 kit is the way to go. Maybe the 10" .50 will come another day, after a laser though(and a black leather trenchcoat:D )

Well.....if you put swimming nose plugs on, and keep your mouth closed you won't have the overpressure running up your sinus's, and that'll help.....but it'll sure look strange, better take a pic and post it here:D
