Desert eagle question

Corect me if I'm wrong but Isreal developed the Desert eagle right?
I assume the military.
So why did they do it, a big ass pistol with recoil most soldiers will have a hard time handling, I am assumeing that they had a special application in mind, what was it?

It was never meant to be a combat gun.

I believe it was designed and manufactured to prove that they COULD make a reliable gas operated magnum semi-auto handgun.
