These are both new XIX pistols, note the flute like groove running along the barrel on one, and the other is smooth. Why is this?

MRI's website says that the 357 barrels are fluted.

I would guess this is for looks only, although I can't really say how flutes would make it look better. It looks good enough as it is. Flutes apparently help with heat dispersion although I've yet to see if that sales pitch holds up to scrutiny.

fluting cuts weight and more importantly, creates a larger surface area which does make cooling more effective.
Don't believe the hype.

I'm with Dave L.

Flutes do create more surface area, but more importantly they decrease mass...and while less mass takes less time to cool, it also means the barrel will heat up faster. A barrel with more mass, may take longer to cool, but it also takes longer to heat up...basically you give up one thing in exchange for another. The only real benefit is less weight.

That's not fluted, you're just looking at it from a funny angle. It's exactly the same as the second pic above, which is the .50AE non-fluted one. (Look just above the "50AE" marking...it's flat all the way to the rail, whereas the fluted ones have the flute cut almost all the way to the front.)
