Designated Marksman Match - attaching bipod to M14

I would really like to use my M14SE "Crazy Horse" rifle for the upcoming DM match, but think that it really needs a bipod to be as reasonably competitive as possible (bipods are allowed).

One person said that I could put a swivel stud into the "weep hole" and then attach a Harris bipod to the stud. This seems like a good idea, except there is not much room around the weep hole (approx. 0.940" in front of it; 0.580" behind it; and, almost no space above it, where the op rod is).

I really like the articles approach, but I don't really have the tools and am somewhat worried that I would somehow find a way to make a mess of it.

I saw some bipods that attach to the barrel, but I think attaching things to the barrel is not a good idea.

Can anyone confirm and/or deny that attaching a bipod to the barrel may not be the smartest thing to do?

Can anyone recommend somebody near the GTA that has experience putting bipods on an M14 and that can do this to mine within the next 3 weeks?

Any other ideas / suggestions?

Id replace the sling mount with the Verapod or SEI rail system or the harris adapter for the M14.I have both system an they work very well.
Dont use the ones that attach to the barrel as it throws off the harmonics of the barrel.
You can also drop Hungry a line an he'll steer ya in rite direction with what ya want to accomplish with the M14 platform.

i and a guy by the name of john shaw can both confirm that attaching a bipod to the barrel or gas system is a VERY STUPID THING to do- when you go prone, the bipod exerts a pressure UPWARD on your barrel, bending it to some degree( yes, i know it's a small bend) and throws off your barrel harmonics- ( if you don't know who john shaw is, you haven't been shooting very long- try mid south shooter) - he wrote a book- you can't miss- and i've lived by that since the80's
anyway, far better to drill out one of the rivets that hold the sling swivels on and mount a sling swivel stud in there, or somewhere on the bottom of the forestock- and here's a tip- do NOT use the nut that comes with, but a flat nut instead- and a stepped hole- it's a 8-32 thread on most of those studs, and drill just big enough to accomodate the stud in the bottom side, then countersink the nut so that it's level with the barrel channel- then epoxy the works in place
 
I cut a small steel plate and hammered it to put a slight curve in it to fit the contour of the inside of the stock. I drilled and tapped a hole to fit a sling swivel stud. I then used a dremel and recessed the inside of the stock, rear of the stock sling swivel plate, and epoxied the plate in. There is clearance, but watch out for the gas assembly and op rod guide. Mark the inside of the stock where there is maximum clearance. I prefer the bipod closer to the magazine well, and not as far foreward as possible.
