There is something about autumn leaves and old guns that makes it hard to stay in my desk. After work, today, those leaves got me thinking about making a desktop photo for the computer. Here's the result, with an old (made in either 1879 or 1880) S&W known as the New Model No. 3 in .44 Russian (of course, 125 years later, it is not 'New' anymore). For the story behind the S&W .44 Russian, see http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt44russ.htm It was once very popular in the Old West. See also http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ga_handguns/forgotten_44s/
This 125 year-old iron is in excellent condition and I've already taught a big old post down in the bean field a lesson it won't soon forget. Unfortunately, I'm down to five rounds left and a long wait time until I get the proper mould for more bullets.

If anyone wants a hi-res version of one or both of the photos below to use as a desktop, let me know and I'll email you one in a day or so.

A Timeless Treasure EH

Looks like a great authentic shooter! Saw its UBerti replica two days ago.
Still a great practical design as that postt down the bean field can testify to!

Im shootin 5 grs of unique with a 245 gr bullet in an 1884 S&WDA 44 Russian with a 6.5 in barrel shes a tack driver very acurate gun.
I got a can of HP 38 i bought at a gun show and now have load data to shoot that as well thanks for the great links :D

Nice gun. You don't need special lead for it though unless you're gonna shoot black powder in them and need a bigger lube groove. Any lead that'll work in .44mag or .44 special will work dandy in the .44 russian as well. Anyhow, thanks for posting that picture. Now I've got slobber all over my monitor screen.
Happy trails.
