Hi everyone,

I would like to learn more about detachable mag conversion kits. I have done some quick research and I have found a number of threads that indicate there are converison kits out there, but being new to bolt action rifles, I am uncertain whether they will fit in my 700 VTR.

I just looked up the difference between short action vs long action. Is the following statement true?:

Shorter rounds like .223/5.56mm, 308 Win & 243 are short action. .30-06, .270, 300 Win Mag & longer rounds go into long actions.

If so, it would indicate that the short or long action kits would fit any respective short or long action rem 700 regardless of its designation (police, tactical, VTR, SPS, etc)

I am looking for... well the same thing everyone wants, I guess: a kit that is inexpensive, reliable, and easy to install. A bonus would be a 10-Rd mag capacity. I've seen a number of suggestions by searching this forum, but without any experience using any of these products, I would like to know what you guys have to say about them.

Thoughts?

Here's what I found so far skimming through this forum:

HS precision: superior quality, few feed issues, Moderately expensive, approx $250 (with the mag).

VBull: may have bugs, Very expensive, $495 CDN according to website, mag may or may not be included

Badger Ordnance: may also have bugs, price unknown

AI system: some say is better than HS kit. Expensive, reportedly.

CDI Precision Gunworks: unknown reliability. Expensive $209 US + $80 for 10rd AI mag.

Can anyone verify these findings or add to them?

Go take a look at mystic precisions page on the dealer area and choose whichever dbm you like the look/price of. Jerry has been excellent to deal with and has answered all my problems really quickly. I was going to go with Cdi but decided to go with factory dbm for my savage.

BC Tactical is the least expensive & can be done your self if they inlet your stock. This is the route I went. Easyiest is to send your rifle to Alberta Tactical Rifle and they will do it all for you. Both us Accuracy International magazines.

Badger Ord. is the standard from which all others have copied. VBull is expensive but has features not found on any other DBM system.

AI system? There is the AICS Chassis made by Accuracy International for Remington rifles- is that what you are talking about? Otherwise, the majority of popular DBM’s use AI’s magazines. These include Badger Ord, CDI, VBull, Seekins, PT&G, Surgeon, Hopper, ATRS, and many more. These are all held in high regard and if installed correctly are the most reliable and durable DBM’s on the market.

HS Precision uses proprietary magazines which are expensive and often impossible to find. They also can have feed issues due to the washers often used during install. Wyatt’s are proprietary. They have a good reputation for being durable, but are single stack which makes very long magazines. The ten rounder is ridiculous.

It is always better to go with a DBM that takes AI just because that is the most popular. This guarantees supply won’t dry up and if you lose or forget one chances are another guy at the range will have an extra. You won’t have those options with the proprietary units.

Send a PM to Sean at North Shore (juanvaldez); he carries Wyatt bottom metal that shouldn't require any inletting of your stock. I'm looking at some for my 700 as well.
:agree:

I have the Wyatt bottom metal system from Sean at North Shore and it works great. Price was good too. I got a 5 round mag and a 10 round mag, I seem to use the 5 rd'r the most though. And it fits right in with no inletting work needed.
