What is it about detachable magazines for bolt and lever rifles? How can they be any advantage unless one is a detested "road warrior" who has a clip ready that can loaded in an instant ;) I had a couple detachable mag rifles in the distant past and on more than one occasion, I couldn't locate the damn "clip" and ended up hunting with a single shot  All of my big game rifles (exception is an old SMLE, I'm Canadian ;)) feature hinged floorplates. A push of the release and the cartridges are emptied into my hand. And as for fast reloading, are you that poor a shot that you empty an entire mag and still need more ammo in a hurry? :p

I like them cuz then, like, you don't get too many fingerprints on them nice, shiney boolits. :D

Hey BCBB, if you keep losing your detatchables, maybe you could get one of them idiot-strings for mittens and modify it to hold your mags around your neck.:sucks:

While I have rifles with detachable mags and some with floor-plates and a blind magazine or two I have to admit I really have no favorite.
In any case as I slowly convert my collection from repeaters to single shots magazine type become less of an issue. ;)

I like them. I'm not above bringing my gun with me while scouting an area in my jeep or a quad and taking a shot of opportunity if it presents itself.

How about spares? I have both but the DM sure is quick to load if opportunity knocks or if you are just being lazy. They both work so whats the big deal. Also prevents you from dumping a pile of cartridges while unloading a floorplate with cold hands. Still have no faves. I buy what it comes with and use it accordingly.

i have both. other than losing your clip, i prefer them over floor plates.IMHO you can reload much faster with a clip. to reload with a floor plate and a scope i find it time consuming especially with cold fingers if your hunting. i can't honestly say it's ever cost me any follow up shots

I have owned and still own all three in bolt actions, blind mag, hinged floorplate, and detachable mags. In the "real" world it does not make a difference.

I myself prefer blind mags in bolt action rifles.

My rifles have detachable magazines primarly because I live in an area where I can leave an unloaded rifle out for predators. In this situation it's a definite advantage over a floor plate or blind mag

When I take them hunting I double check to make sure I haven't left the magazine at home.

Detachable magazines are simply faster and easier in loading and that is why I prefer that kind of magazines. I have all three types of magazines so can compare it. Hing floorplates in my opinion take more time to load and unload and I have to be very careful unloading not to drop bullets.

Finally someone with a good point. I was just outside after a coyote two minutes ago with a couple cartridges in my pocket. In that instance, it would be useful.

at one time almost all of my centrefire guns had no detachable mag, all were fixed mag models. i remember the first DM gun i bought i fell in love with - you cannot deny that there is a convenience in it that is unmatched in fixed mag guns.
i find it especially useful when varmint hunting... you move around from spot to spot by vehicle so you have to load and unload your gun frequently. it is so convenient to just pop the mag and put it in your pocket, check the chamber and off you go. arrive and just pop the mag in. cycling rounds out of the chamber or popping the floorplate and dumping them all each time, then having to reload them again, gets annoying.

im not saying its a huge advantage, but its definitely a convenience.

if i saw two identical guns for the same price, one with a detachable mag and one without, i would go for the detachable mag one without any hesitation.
if the DM one was $50 more, id have to think about it a bit. $75-100+ more? id go with the floorplate.

Own many rifles that I've wanted ..some have blind some have removable magazines and some have hinged floor plates. None of these features has ever been the reason to buy or not buy a particular rifle...they each just came that way.
I unload my magazines at the end of each day and put the the empty back in the rifle so have never lost one nor forgot to bring one along on a hunt. Have spares for each gun with removable mags...but were purchased in case the original got damaged over the years or the rifle is of suitable age when mags became rare and or expensive..

I guess if you have a particular preference that's all it is..your choice !

HS 45/70...yer mileage may vary

Try this:
Flip the rifle upside down with the bolt closed, open the floorplate, and dump in three - I bet you can do it with your mitts on!

i dont see the big negative fuss about magazines.
you can load them from the top the same way you would load a blind mag or floorplate model, but you also have the option of removing the mag or reloading from a mag. it just gives you more versatility and potential convenience.

ill have to give that a try. still, many floorplates are just a pain in the ass to operate with small and finicky release latches, you sometimes need both hands to pop the follower/spring back and close the floorplate, when you dump them sometimes you drop rounds, etc. some people accidentally pop their floorplate release and dump their rounds all over the snow/mud. so much easier to just slap in a mag.
