I've only been shooting pistols for about 2 years. But I've already put around 3000 rounds through my Walther P99 and have yet to do a detailed disassembly and cleaning. I do clean everything I can reach after every trip to the range, but what else should I do? How often do you do this? Where do I find more info on how to do it?

My P99 gets field stripped every time its used. Use Q-tips to get in the tigger area, and use a cleaning/ lubricating spray to get in there.
Have never taken the trigger assembly apart for cleaning yet.. if thats what you mean by detailed. You do take it down to clean it though.. right?

By detailed, do you mean complete disassembly or simply removing the slide and barrel? If your answer is more than slide removal, I would recommend reviewing your warranty(which will probably be null and void should you do more than a field strip) and google your pistol online. I'm sure it won't be difficult but it would be wise to fully understand what you're doing before you end up breaking something.

Beyond basic field-stripping for cleaning, specifically into the frame, slide, barrel, recoil assembly, and magazine, it is advised that only the striker assembly be removed, as described in the P99 manual.
