The federal government wants to train people for well-paying careers within the federal public service. In addition to jobs that pay more than $52,000 a year with substantial benefits packages, those who apply will also receive paid training while they prepare for those careers. Those who are chosen will undergo a 16-week basic training period that will cover such topics as fishing gear, fish identification, acts and regulations, marine emergency duties and enforcement methods and the use of force, including firearms training and mandatory exposure to pepper spray. The first seven weeks of training will take place in one location while the remaining nine weeks will occur at the RCMP Academy in Regina, Sask. Cadets undergoing training will receive an allowance of $350 a week but taxes, employment insurance, and Canada Pension Plan will be deducted along with room and board of $90. Once classroom training is completed, you will be appointed to a GT-02 fishery officer position and if you complete the 30 months of field training, you will then be appointed to a GT-04 position that pays $62,556 to $71,124. If you don’t complete the training or don’t accept a fishery officer position, you may have to reimburse part of your training costs. More information on the positions can be found at https://emploisfp-psjobs.cfp-psc.gc.ca/psrs-srfp/applicant/page1800?poster=1520826. The opportunity to apply happens about once a year, and in 2021, the deadline to apply is Jan. 11.
