DI Precision

My wife would agree with you that on occasion I too am an angry ex-army guy:cool:
But honestly, I'm quite amicable in person and the vast majority of my posts are done with zero anomosity - maybe it is my matter of fact writing style?
Anyhoo, like I've said, I'm all for testing and playing around with stuff - even if it has all been done before.;)

There was no doubt in my mind, I think like you write, but my mouth is without a brake. I really have a knack for offending people.

I made the trip today to our friends at Epps and grabbed 200 Hdy 75gr HPBT's and the price on the single gill brake was too good to pass on. Gas was less than shipping so I'm pleased I decided to go.

I had decided I was going to suck it up and get some SMK...Laugh2, not this time.

...several hours later...:bangHead: had to spend an hour sorting through 200 projectiles of the same lot, at times Hornady QC has been pretty bad. Shortest was 0.978", longest was 0.997"...wth, had to complain to Hornady, be interesting to see what they do. Time to send Jerry a PM.

Edit...Further to above, Hornady got back to me quickly and gave me the specs./tolerances. Since he went through the bother I've measured them all. Only two are out of spec., apparently they don't monitor the meplat closely, only a problem because I load them as long as I can get away with. If I can get some good groups I guess I'll be fine with the variation in the length.

First I'll say, I'm very pleased with my interaction with Hornady over what I thought was out of spec. projectiles. I've found their products are good value for the coin over the years and now I'm confidant if I have a problem they'll make it right.

So I've been burning through my supply of 75gr Hdy Match with mixed results. I was concerned about the length of the bullets, but as Jerry pointed out to me seating them long is a fools errand as the throat of a NATO, or even Wylde chamber is too long for that to help. He suggested I focus on charge and neck tension. Last night I loaded up 25 for another go at Trinimon's MOA challenge, carefully trimming each case to 1.750", running them all through my collet neck die (after FL sizing), very carefully measuring the charge (23.0gr of H-4895), seating for a COL of 2.54", and a relatively light crimp with a Lee collet crimp die..

I should have brought some for a warm up...the top two are my last two. There were some pretty strong wind gusts, according to Env. Can. up to 40 km/h but the range is pretty sheltered so I'd say no more than 20 km/h (forgot my Anemometer). Those last two, looking good right, just one flier as a friend noted, but it's not. Look at each of those groups, that flier is in everyone. It's the first shot...any idea as to what this is about?

With wind that high, you could have environmental forces pushing the bullets out of the group. Try for a calmer day or use flags

As we discussed, look at the groups in their entirety. Don't look at 4 out of 5 rds.... the group is THE entire group.... I can say an SKS with surplus is a sub MOA rifle if I only pick and choose the shots I want.

Now average that group size over several groups - this is the better indicator of what the rifle will actually do. My SWAG of the group size shows all 5 groups to be very similar in the 1 1/2" range so those outs really aren't.

The easiest way to see this is to shoot 20rds in 4x5rds groups using the same aiming point and let the bullet fall where they may. Very quickly you will see the "average" with shots overlapping and the "outs" now becoming the edges of your group.

however, if you see a core with "outs" always in the same direction and shot in the same way, then maybe you have a mechanical issue?????

Did you let the barrel cool between each group? maybe your cold bore is out????

Anyways, you are well on your way.

Jerry

Ok, the wife is away so I took a single day vac off work today and went to the club to coronagraph my 30 Herrett AR reloads. 6 degrees with intermittent wind mixed in with some sun and cloud. Not bad but, damn I fell apart and pulled one which I felt as soon as I pulled the trigger.

I know it's not the DI precision AR that is the weak link as much as me. These groupings are with a bi-pod minus any method of supporting the buttstock which makes the breathing, cheek and grip pressure essential.
