I saw a TV show on the Discovery Channel a year or so ago about Mongolia. In particular there was a sporting competition that the young guys enjoyed that involved riding a horse (more like a pony) flat out and knocking plates off posts with an SKS. These guys could shoot from horseback better than I can from prone. I guess that's what happens when supper AND survival depend on your ability.

My brother trekked through Mongolia last year. He sent me some pictures of the Mongolian ponies. The ponies are pretty small, but he says they can go all day long.

Here is an note from his travel log ....

I just left Mongolia after a month exploring the grasslands ..... trekking .. horse riding ....... eating every kind of imaginable dairy product and then some ... fermented mares milk beer ... cows milk homemade vodka??? 16 types of dried curds and cheese like things ... people living the nomad life are either pretty hospitable or stare at you while their crazy dogs go ballistic in an attempt to get you. I tended to visit the friendly ones a lot more often. Hard travelling but I enjoyed the differences. Made it up as far north as lake Khovskal ...... excellent horse trekking .. delicious smoked fish.

i would stare at your bro too and wonder "WTF are you doing here when you could be by the swimming pool with a cold beer?" :D sound like he had a interesting adventure.

oh about those ponies, those are the ponies that carried attila the hun and gengis khan half way around the world.

I saw a similar show where they were shooting some sort of ground hog slash giant marmot with a Moisin Nagant. The highlight of the hunt was to cook the beast in its own juices over a bed of horse dung coals. In the words of Jed Clampit, "MMMM Doggies!"

Apparently they haven't been told that the SKS is an inaccurate rifle.

Surly the weekend warriors on this board that dump on the SKS have as much practice, and skill shooting on a daily basis as a Mongolian Horseman.
