Did I get lucky and find a Non-refurb SKS at my local shop?

Hey fellow red rifle fans, I am in need of some help. I was at my local store in London and they had a big selection of SKS's in there. Now I already have two refurbs so I wasn't really looking for another. However I saw one while talking with the guy behind the counter and noticed one had a somewhat gold bayonet.

I asked to look at it and while I was looking noticed that the stock had no ###X's on it. So I gave it a better look and noticed again that there were no signs of refurb on it. There is no diamond on the receiver cover, no X'ed out anything and all the numbers match. There is the final inspection mark on the side as wella s the 4 marks around the cross bolt. Even the butt plate has an electro pencil serial number on it. However there is no tula star with the date on the side of the stock above the serial number. There are electro pencil marks on the smaller pieces but they are all looking like they are original, nothing has been ground off and re done. Everything no this rifle is super tight looking. If anyone could help me out and let me know if they think it's unrefurbed or if it is a refurb I would really appreciate it. So far I feel as though it is not refurbed and am very happy I got it at regular price of $199. I have attached some pics to help with this.

Thanks for any help. I like to think I know a lot about SKS's but I'd feel better about the purchase if I knew it was unrefurbed.

PS if anyone is looking for a 54 hardwood SKS in great shape in London let me know as I now have an extra for sale.

Not all refurbs have the mark.

That being said, this one has all the marks that a non-refurb SKS should have. Nice score.

Thanks! It's always nice to hear that someone else agrees with what you think! I was not sure since it was missing the star and date on the stock, but I finally gave it a good look over and took it apart and everything seems to check out. It for sure has been used, but must not have needed the refurb process.

Replacement stocks won't match, nor will they have the inspection marks around the cross bolt like yours does. Replacement laminate stocks are often missing the ###X as they were stamped to match during refurb, but were never on another gun. They won't have the inspection marks of an original stock though.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad I bought it now! Went into the store looking for a cheap 22 rifle, and just happened upon this one. Didn't want or need another SKS but these things sure are contagious.

Im no expert but I thought electro pencil means it was refurbed force match?

Very nice sks either way

They used electro pencils on parts that the metal is not thick (butt plate and gas tube ).

The model 1955r with only the serial # on the left side of the stock is a late 55 model (same marking as de 56 ).
Very good find.

A cheap 22 and your average priced SKS cost about the same amount. The cheap 22 will be there tomorrow but chances are a nice SKS like you got wouldn't.Even if it turned out to be another refurb and another SKS you simply didn't want(crazy talk)or need you'd have no problem selling it for what you paid or possibly more. You did very well I'd say.

This is what I understood to! Could be wrong though. I have one non referb factory 26 SKS and it has no electro pencil parts. 2 Russians I have are both referbs. 1 looks like a light referb with no referb marks and all matching but the magazine. The other is a black bolt heavy referb with non matching parts and several force matched (electro pencil) parts. They are fun to collect and shoot! Can't beat them for the price.

Thanks everyone for their input.

I feel pretty lucky to have picked a good one up! After going over everything and cleaning it up I can safely say its been used but it's all original! Makes it that much cooler for me!

Also, I notice that the wood on the handgaurd touches the stock evenly, where as my refurbs there is a gap in-between.

Nice SKS! I found 2 unrefurb last winter at my Canadian Tire, a 1954 and a no date letter K, both without refurb mark and all inspector cartouches were there and at $199 each, too good find to not buy.

I am very glad I got a good deal. Too often on this site I see awesome deals people get, and now I am one of them! Feels pretty nice!

And Walleyed, mine looks just like yours!

If anyone is interested, Gobels had a lot of SKS's in their rack and there could be more in there like mine. The staff didn't even know what I was talking about when I said it was un-refurbed so I bet there could be more!
