I just setup my Lee Pro 1000 in .40s&w and made a dummy.

screwed the sizing die until it touched the shellholder and added 1/4 turn.
screwed the expender die until it touched the shellholder and backed half a turn.
screwed the sitting die until it touched the a brass case, added half a turn, seated a bullet until 1.130" OAL (CCI Blazer were 1.133", Hogdgon say 1.125")

Crimp is 0.417", Case is 0.418", rim is 0.419"

For LEE pistol dies - carbide or steel - they recommend the resizer touches the shell holder. For other brand - the instruction will be slightly different. ie. For RCBS pistol carbide dies - the resizer should never touches the shell holder.

OK, I've given advice different from Lee - having the die .010" off the shellplate will not affect the sizing, but it will make the carbide less likely to crack.

Perhaps someone can address his other concerns, like the expander setup.

Set it up the way Lee tells you. If you have failure problems, then its up to you and Lee to figure out. Personally, any time a die exerts additional downward pressure on a shell plate I would be concerned about warpage etc.. Lee has also made this a concern in past but I now see that it no longer mentions it anywhere. Either they have improved their product or rely on the user not having the sense to realize this and can sell additional part replacements.:runaway:
Go for it.. Now all you need to do is address the priming problems when they start to appear:confused: . Again, read the helpful hints and refer to the help videos. They are a great resource.
Good luck
