So here is where the problem lies, I never realized that the PAL form goes so in-depth.

I was arrested/charged for domestic assault in Sept/Oct 2009 and the charge was later withdrawn after a lengthy battle and entering into a peace bond.

Next, I am going through a long drawn out separation that has lasted 2 years, since then I have been in a new conjugal relationship for almost 2 years...

Haven't seen the ex in 2 years everything has been done through lawyers so she is not going to give me a good reference!!

So, for section 16 I have to answer Yes to all but 16 D?

So, should I even bother trying to apply and if I do and get denied can I reapply at a later time?

Should I just wait another year till I can say no to all but the last question in section 16 (the ex will still give me a bad reference though).

If I do apply, I will have to write a lengthy letter for section 16, it says I must provide details??? what does that mean? what kind of details?

Sorry for the long post.. and thank you.

Honesty is best policy. With that said I don't think you will have any problems as long as no weapons, drug, smuggling charges are present. Can you not use friends as references as opposed to ex's?

I will not be using the ex for a references but they do have to call/interview her right? again haven't talked to her in about 2 years but I know she would do anything to make my life miserable.

I had a similar issue with my ex-wife and my application. Be honest on the application and explain the situation during your phone interview. They are reasonable when determining suitability for licensing.

"...in Sept/Oct 2009..." That's longer than the three years(No conviction either) on the application, but don't leave it out.
"...get denied can I reapply..." Yep, but I think there's a question about being denied too.

Ok they will want details so might as well write a letter explaining what happened ect. You say stuff like this was the charge this is what happened this is what was done and this is what it is now. I don't speak to my ex blah blah blah so I didn't get her to sign it because I don't want to deal with that person. She's not a reference they just want to see if anyone has concerns for safety 10 bucks says she says yes. They speak to the other people look at the history then go yep or nope. You can always apply again in a years time or ask to go in front of a judge and appeal what they decided. You can fight and win if they say no it's not hard just takes money and time.

All previous posts are really good advice - so take heart.

If you make the effort to explain your case - what was said about you, how things stood at the end of the day - they will make the effort to read it. Make sure you 'present' yourself properly on the phone and be forthright - lets face it, they can dig up all the dirt themselves - so better it comes from you.

Good luck!

Were you married with this girl ?
Your assault charge dates from 4 years ago so i wouldn't even bother with it. You can mention it but i dont think they will even note it
If you were NOT married and have not been with this girl "for at least 2 years" you don't have to include her 2 bits in it that's what it says in the application

Provide information about your former conjugal partners. This includes any person, other than the person named in Box 18, with whom you have lived in a
conjugal relationship --->> within the last two (2) years<<

Be honest in your replies tell your side of the story and let them decide ,in many cases answering yes does not automatically disqualify you nor does a negative from an ex spouse .

Just a heads up, don't be surprised if your provincial CFO passes your application onto your local Police office for a second interview for final approval. This was the case for my buddy for a different type of incident.

Baha that happened to me all because of an occurrence on my record, when i spoke with the firearms officer for hamilton he couldn't believe that i was being hassled for a crime that had not been committed. ( police were called on me because i was apparently going to attack my sisters ex bf . Police report showed all i did was asked for her stuff back and both sides agreed)
