Personally, I dislike this type of over-specialized shotgun but I do admire some of the features. But anyway it's probably pre-prohibited in Canada.

A little humour in the title there, for those who don't know the forum software won't allow 'foreign' punctuation in the title block.

The S&W M&P12 Bullpup Shotgun brings compact firepower.

Smith & Wesson made huge news today with the announcement of the M&P12 Bullpup Shotgun. This one comes designed for tactical use and home defense, featuring a dual-magazine system that provides extreme versatility and utility. The question now comes: Is the Smith & Wesson M&P12 the ultimate home defense gun?

Smith & Wesson M&P12 Details

Over at Tactical Life, Robert Jordan blasted away at the range, getting his first shots downrange with the new bullpup design. And he came away totally impressed. Check out the video, as it clearly demonstrates this new shotgun as a heavy hitter.

The M&P12 comes fully loaded with features in a compact, CQB-worthy design. It eats 3-inch shells like a champ. But it also easily digests 2 3/4-inch and even mini-shells, seriously upping the payload potential. It also comes fully ambidextrous as well. An M&P-style grip and Picatinny rail only add to the appeal.

“Smith & Wesson has a long, storied history of making handguns for self-defense, yet no conversation around personal protection can be complete without mentioning the 12 gauge shotgun,” said Kyle Tengwall, Vice President of Marketing, Smith & Wesson. “With the introduction of the new M&P12, Smith & Wesson is able to offer our consumers a personal protection product in a variety of categories: pistol, revolver, rifle, and shotgun. Today, we’re excited to unveil the M&P12 – a new category introduction for Smith & Wesson, and a firearm that’s purpose-built for protection and a blast to shoot at the range.”

Built for Home Defense

The pump-action design features two independent magazine tubes. Each utilizes load-assist buttons to simplify loading and unloading. Each tube holds up to seven rounds of standard 2 3/4-inch shells or up to six rounds of 3-inch magnums. Users select magazine tubes via a simple, push-button selector. It also provides a visual cue to which tube is actually feeding the gun.

The S&W M&P12 utilizes fully-ambidextrous AR-15-style controls.

AR-style controls come fully ambidextrous, including the safety selector. Four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts deliver familiar versatility to M&P fans. The shotgun measures 27.8 inches overall, making it extremely well-suited for tight spaces. M-LOK slots on the barrel shroud enable users to bolt on a host of lights, lasers and other desired accessories. Modified and Cylinder choke tubes, along with a foam-lined case and choke wrench, round out this impressive package.

And while I know the adrenaline will be flowing freely in a situation where a home defense shotgun will be deployed, I do think that owners who count on using them should experience firing at least one 12 G shot sans ear pro in an enclosed interior space like a hallway.

Smith and Wesson was originally behind the UTS-15 design before they backed out of the project, which was completed and sold by UTAS.

Over 8lbs empty. That sucker is going to be heavy when loaded up.

Besides, they already had the perfect HD gun, the model 3000. Well, could have used a 14” barrel, then it would be perfect.

Nothing wrong with 12-14 rounds capacity. However FBI shooting statistics often quote the typical street gunfight involving a shotgun mostly one or two rounds expended.

Drama over, except the report and shotgun cleaning.

Last time I heard of police involved shotgun used the drug dealer born elsewhere fired on his partner using his wop 9milly.
(Wounding her)
Then the other officer took his face off with the big gauge in an apartment complex.

It would suck 1000%, but tinnitus would be the least of my worries if was shooting in a for-real-poop-your-shorts kind of situation.

Wouldn't necessarily be pre-prohibited. We do have the Kel-Tec offerings, which are similar, in Canada already.

It's just that I have memories of being curious about the Franchi SPAS-12 the Terminator uses in the first movie and finding out that it had already been banned in Canada. Likewise when, being a suspenders and belt guy who thought a switchable pump-semi auto was a pretty neat idea, I went looking for a Benelli M3 and was told the same thing.

Having grown up in the city, I didn't realize Canadians legally owned guns at all until I was already a man.

Yes, the noise is easy to forget because ear pro is reflexive for most regular shooters. Storing earmuffs with a firearm for defence is as good idea.

It needs more screws and a lazier design.

Ah yes and plastic. And its not large enough. Make it waaay larger.

Corrected Title: Did Smith and Wesson Just Drop the Perfect POS shotgun ?

Yes they did... yes they did.

In a high stress situation such as home invasion you can probably count on adrenaline partially nullifying the audible report of that first discharge.
Not so much afterwards.

I remember arguing with an American who was going to buy a 12 G for his wife to keep in the bedroom when he was out of town (he was online looking for feedback, I wasn't jumping in uninvited). I was saying that indoors the tremendous noise and pressure wave of a 12 would likely totally disorient her and make her drop the gun, etc after the first shot and was arguing for something like a .410 but he was a big gauge always equals big safety guy and his mind was made up. But for sure, anyone is going to be unable to tell what is going on in the house after firing once: movements downstairs, children crying, etc. Unless they have mighty steel ears, which I don't believe exist.
