I'm in the market for a good short barrelled hunting rifle. I have really taken a liking to the ruger m77 compact. This one http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=7962&return=Y

I would consider the frontier version if the offered it with a walnut stock. I just plain hate laminates.

I hike a lot as I do not own a quad and want something that is going to be light and easy to swing around on tight cut lines and deer paths. I like the way this gun feels over all.

The problem I'm having is, like every man, I think that it's small stature is going to bring the taunts and ridicule. It does look very much like a youth or women's gun.

So would you make fun of a 6'1" 215lb man packing this little friend?

P.S. It's going to be a .308.

dude, it's a.308. no wussy-gun there. Infact, if you're comfortable shooting a .308 with a short barrel and no weight, you're probably more of a man than your buddies with magnum-itis that don't get off their quad with their
.300's. You'd look smart, not wussy!

Cooper's concept of a "Scout Rifle" was a .308 bolt gun 1 meter in length, weighing 3 kilos. Nobody laughed at him....well not to his face.

If you are out walking, shooting, and enjoying the day why would you give a rat's ass what anyone else thought??? Self confidence issues??

I have that gun in 308, stainless, with the Grey Laminate stock...I'm 6'2 & 245lbs..........Great gun.......Bolt is a little crummy....but it's a Ruger, not a Sako

It has been said by some that I shoot "wussy gun" calibers.
The name calling stops when the bullets hit the target!

I wouldn't worry about what somebody else thinks of your choice of firearm,
I never have..

I make fun of anybody taller than 5' 6". I don't laugh at their rifles though. Inanimate objects don't react. Takes the fun out of it.
'I want one' is reason enough to buy it. The felt recoil out of a 5.25 lb .308 will be stout. The noise and blast out of a 16.5" barrel will be considerable too. Your size means nothing when it comes to felt recoil and muzzle blast.
I notice that Ruger says nothing on their site about the length of pull. Fortunately, if it's a bit short for you, a recoil pad will fix it.

Im bigger than that, and would rather a small gun than a large heavy one.

I bet you have more Ohh's and Ahh's than laugh's!!!

Length of pull is slightly shorter than the regular m77's. It feels a little weird but I figure in November with a jacket, vest, and under shirt on it's not going to be too bad.

Recoil isn't much either as I have been behind a few .300 win mag's and .338 win mag's from a standing position and walked away with little pain or soreness.

The other problem I'm having is what scope to mount. I want something that is going to be light. The magnification doesn't have to be too high considering most of my shots are within 150 yards. I like the leupold VXII in 3X-9X 33mm. Anyone got their hands on one of those?

Muzzle flash is a concern that I didn't consider before.

I will laugh at you, just on general principle...:D

But anyway...Take a look at the 2.5-bx36 Leupold. I use them on severla of my rifles, and they are nice and compact, shoudl fit rightin with your rilfe...
