Today at a local gun show in Buckhorn Ontario, a vendor had a German k98 for sale, it was all matching with laminate stock. I don't recall the factory 3 letter abbreviation but it was a 1943. I thought maybe it was a Russian capture? It had a bent bolt but it was in very rough shape. The barrel was pitted on the outter surfaces. The bore was poor as well. The eagle markings were intact but not clear, the cleaning rod was missing. The bottom metal didn't have the typical locking screw "setup" so they weren't there in the first place .... I walked away from it because of poor condition. However the seller only wanted $350. He would have gone $300 but I backed out.

Bad move guys??? :s

It all depends. It should have had the regular action screw/locking screw setup on the trigger guard in 43. So thats a huge redflag. Although its possible it was a 43 receiver used later, unlikely.

If the condition was that bad, i dont think you missed much. I love the k98k, and pay good money for originals, but it sounds like id have passed if in that bad of shape too. A collectible gun in shyte condition isnt desired by many collectors.

Should have gotten his number.

Ahh fair enough. The really scabby milsurps just don't do it for me, I don't mind some honest wear and tear but the K98k was neglected or left in a barn very much so at some point.

Definitely a RC from your description. The locking screws and front sight protector were removed by the Russkies during refurbishment. ( not sure if the protector was present on yours?). I woulda lowballed him at $200, and see if he'd meet in the middle.

The sight hood was there but the bottom metal didn't have the locking screw locations at all. The Russian capture k98s I've seen have been in way better shape than this example. I should have taken pictures of it.
