Today i put a 7.62x51 cartridge next to one of my 7.62x39 Czech surplus rounds to compare sizes. I never realized how much smaller the 7.62x39 is than the 7.62x51. It looks tiny next to the NATO round! I had always thought they were similar sizes.

Cheers!

Doesn't sound like much, but it's over a centimeter bigger. Now stick a 7.62x39 next to a .30-06 or 7.62x54 cartridge and see the difference.

and this class, explains why the super high powered AK-47 is banned and you are only allowed to use mellow hunting rifles and M14 because they aren't as powerful or as evil.

The bullet for the M43 round (7.62x39) is a tiny bit larger in diameter than the 7.62 NATO, (.310"-to-.311" typically to .308") but shorter.

Now which one is bigger?:p

I just got my first box of 7.62x39 for my SKS today, and was also surprised whit how short the round is.

I've heard that this round is comparable in preformance to the classic .30-30, but I don't see how this can be true. I'd love to handload something that would act as a reliable short distance brush round so I could try the SKS for deer.

No, Gushulak. The .30 WCF (.30-30) was designed as a pre-20th century rifle round, suitable for use with black or smokeless powders, and in barrels of uncertain or varied alloys.

50 years later the M43 round was designed.

And the power is quite comprable between the two, given similar bullet weights.

Could it be that one is designed to be for an assault weapon (aka medium power, high firepower) compared to a high power rifle. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Two different types of weapon systems.

Yes, thats it.
A full power round like the 7.62x51, 303 British, or 30-06 would cause a light wieght rifle to be uncontrollable on full-auto. The first round would be on target, all the rest would be aimed at the sky.
