I recently purchased a 45-70 that I want to reload for and am having trouble finding dies. Previous experience with Lee dies, which are available, left me un-impressed, so I went looking for RCBS dies with no luck. I am reluctent to buy Lee dies so I am looking for advice on a quality die set for my 45-70.

Thank you

Have you tried Dillon? They're all I use and have nothing but good things to say about them.

For the 45-70, you'd want stock #12700. They sell for $59.95 online at their webste and they do ship to Canada.

What part of the Lee dies didn't impress you? All of mine are great, and the only time I had an issue (die body wrong length), Lee fixed it quick and free.
For my S&W 460, I got a set of Redding. Nice dies, but $$$. Thank god the reload/factory cost ratio is so high. Recovered the cost fairly quick.
For my 45-70, I went with the classic Lee loader. Yes, it's slow, but I'm not shooting a ton of ammo....yet.
Also, nothing more fun than pounding out ammo with a hammer ;).

I loaded 45-70 for a while with standard Lee dies. Like you, I don't like them, but I got by.
Their hype was so good that I wasted my money on their Factory Crimp Die.

The Lee 45-70 dies I bought were total crap, they would seat the bullets visibly off center in the case, then I bought a set of Redding dies which are vastly superior in quality and function, I highly recommend the Redding 45-70 dies. As usual you do get what you pay for, Lee would be OK only if there were no other dies available ever again.

I love reloading my 45/70 with a lee loader ,using a scale and a crimp die if needed.
You can crimp with the loader if you want, neck sizing is all I use with my ruger1

I'll jump in with a vote for Redding. I've been very happy with my set. If you're set on RCBS i have a set that I do not use. PM me if you are interested in buying them.

I have used Lee, RCBS, Redding, Forster, CH4D. I will never go back to a Lee die again, will only use my RCBS dies if I can not find Redding in the set I want. I also vote for Redding. IMHO Redding dies are the best bang for your dollar.
