Difference Between 40X and 722 Action.

Remington has marketed the 40X for several decades now. I believe they are simply selected actions from the regular stock that meet the specs needed for the 40X designation. While the early 40X actions were based on the 721/722 action, all the later ones were based on the 700 action. If the 722 action is properly trued and prepped, it should be close to the early series 40X. Regards, Eagleye.
Your trued 722 should perform well. The biggest difference about the 40x based on the 722 action is that it's single shot,no magazine. This feature provides for an arguably stiffer receiver. The only way to really tell is to shoot them and see the result. The proof will be in the puttin' ! Equal shooters.
The 40XB has features closer to the 700(longer bolt shroud and swept and checkered bolt knob) and can be had single shot or with mag. I like 40Xes -
the rimfires are great too!
Early 40X I use in 100 and 200 m/yd precision matches
Later model 40XB same use. On a calm day these will rival and beat many centrefires. That wind'll do it to you every time!

It's my understanding that the 40x actions are not made with the other Remington actions and are made true right from the start. I have a 40XB rangemaster and I really like it. The trigger is superb. The 700 and 40x actions were first sold at around the same time (early 1960's). I think I remember reading that the 700 action is based on the 40x, not the other way around. I don't remember where I read that, so I may be wrong there.
No, Rem made some changes to the shroud and bolt, as well as the trigger if memory serves. But they are a good gun, just hard to get some parts for now days. I have one I rebarreled in a tight twist 243 and plunked into a reworked 700 stock. Shoots quite well, actually. - dan
