I just picked up a Rem 700 buckmaster in 300 win mag. I see a lot of guys using Rem 700 varmints as a long range rig. I was just wondering what the difference was between the 700 buckmaster and 700 SPS varmint?

The sps varmint comes with a heavier contour barrel, while the other sps' come with a sporter weight barrel.

The heavy barrel is ideal for range/target/high volume varmint shooting due to the fact that it takes longer to heat up, so more rounds can be fired before you have to let it cool.

Theres differences in the stocks as well... but the heavy barrel is the main one and the reason people choose it over a regular sps for a range/target gun.

However if you're planning on hunting with the rifle the heavy barrel may not be what you're looking for... as its just more weight to carry.

Is it possible to pickup a heavy barrel in the future?

You can upgrade the rifle as you wish. The SPS V barrel is no better quality, just longer and heavier. Either one will shoot as good as the other.

A precision barrel is more money but would be worth the pennies. The 700 action has a lot of potential, just the factory barrels are not that great really. Get some trigger time in with this barrel and once you feel that you are limited to what you can do as far as accuracy and distance, speak to one of the sponsors and they can easily set you up with a better barrel.

As the owner of an SPS varmint, I can tell you the thing is HEAVY. You won't want to carry this thing around very much. It's good for the bench, or spending the day sitting in a gopher field picking them off from a sitting or prone position. It is not something you want to be walking around with.

Varmint rifles are meant to be shot supported. They are heavy-barreled by design.

As to the question of picking up a heavy barrel for an SPS, yes, but you must make sure the stock can accomodate the size/width of the barrel
