Basically the same rifle but the 30AS has cheaper wood (birch probably) instead of walnut with the better quality checkering and finish. It has the same 336 action as I understand things. The 30AS has been a favorite department store gun in the past (when department stores had a gun department).
In the past I've owned both models at one time or another.
