Difference between Savage 10 and 11 actions?

Want to buy a Savage in 308 and not sure which model to choose.

The rifle will end up in an MDT HS3 chassis.

I don’t care about DBM or stocks given the above.

Handling the two in a few gun stores I cant visually see a difference in the actions or bolts other than bolt handles on some models.

Can anyone explain if there is a difference in the 2 actions and if one is better than the other or more suited for longer range?

Thanks in advance.

Marc

10 is short action, 11 is long action. Someone more knowledgable will come by to confirm.

I have a Savage 10 and 11, they're both short action. 10/11= short action. 110/111= long action.

Wish I could be more helpful op, but I've been trying to sort it out for sometime myself. It seems like the current Savage lineup makes 11's "hunting" rifles and 10's "tactical/target" but even that's pretty subjective.

RKM is right on this one. In general, the design between the two actions is identical (rear tang safety, 3 position safety, free floating bolt head, 2 lug bolt, etc.) but the model 10's usually get the "target" and "precision" features, whereas the model 11's get the "hunting" treatment. I have built rifles off of both actions and can tell you there is no funtional advantage to go with one over the other from a strictly action standpoint. However, if you don't want to do a full build (trigger/barrel setup) then you're usually better off with the model 10's, due to barrel/brake/bolt handle options they get out of the factory.

To repeat, The actions are the same from 10-11, Typically the 10 has a heavier barrel "precision", versus the 11 which has the sporter barrel "hunting". I agree with Kudu, better off with a 10 for the Chassis set-up.

In defense of the 11 series. I bought myself a Savage 11 LRH in October and its barrel comes with a brake from factory and the barrel is kind of a "mid" contour. It's not a heavy barrel like my 10TR, but you can run about 15 rounds (6.5 Creedmoor) through it before it'll start to effect accuracy. Granted, it's the exception and not the rule. The 10TR was a great gun right out of the box.
