Difference between Swedish Mausers (Tradex) and Parker Hale Mausers?

Hi guys,

I've had at least three German Mausers over the years, but they were all of military descent. And I've owned a beat-up Parker Hale 1200 in .308.

Next time I go moose hunting, I may take the Remington 81 or Savage 340, but I might prefer to buy a decent bolt action hunting rifle again. And from what I've seen over the years, the two decent-priced Mauser-type rifles are the Parker Hales built on Santa Barbara actions, which tend to come loaded with features like detachable mags and adjustable triggers, OR the Swede Mausers that everyone reccomends from TradeEx.

Why does everyone recommend the Swedish guns and not the Parker Hales?

If you are referring to the HVA 1600 series, they are a small ring improved '98 basically, with a different style ejector, made with very good steel, by very skilled craftsmen. They are a sleek, slick action, great handling no nonsense hunting rifle that will last several lifetimes. Triggers are their own design and usually the only complaint, but completely suitable for hunting.
PH are very nice rifles as well, nothing wrong with them at all, the SB and Zastava actions are basic late model FN98 clones. Some stocks are much heavier then they need to be, bolt handles are a bit stubby compared to the HVA mausers, the adjustable triggers are great however.
HVA has a bit of a fit/finish advantage, at least the ones I have compared to the SB-PH rifles I own.
Really just boils down to a few minor differences between the 2 rifles, and the HVA are more readily available thanks to Tradex.

Usually the term Swedish Mauser refers to the model 96 small ring Mauser, they are a #### on closing rifle and a predecessor to the model 98, the Husqvarna 1600s are a design that takes inspiration from both the 96 and 98 combining elements of both, Husqvarna also made a 98 using FN actions from Belgium. There is an entire thread dedicated to the Husky's with a lot of info including the later push feed models. Quite often Tradeex has a large selection of used rifles including Parker Hale, Husqvarna and Carl Gustaf. They will answer emails and the phone if you want info on a particular rifle and my experience is they are very honest with descriptions and usually offer good value.
