Walmart sells .223 under the Winchester 40 rounds bulk pack. The bullet is a 45 grain JHP while

Lever sells the UMC/Remington .223 in 20 packs. with bullet being the same at 45 grain JHP.

Walmart is $16.95/40 rounds while Lever is $18.95 /20 rounds.

Anybody know the real difference out of an 16" AR-15 ?

That weight is for slow turning twists, 1:12" or 1:14" so if your 16" barrel has a faster twist 1:7" or 1:9" it may not be a good idea to use either one.

So the finer points in the differance between the two would be irrelevent.

do you only want to buy 20 rounds? does it have to be 45gr?

Lever also has 200 rounds of the 55gr for
"Remington UMC .223 Rem 55 gr., MC 200 $69.00 "

but most stores will sell you 55gr AmericanEagle ammo for a lot less, i saw some really cheap .223 out at Royal Sportsman in bby, a few weeks ago

I had read in AR15.com that the ideal weight would be 55 gr for my 1:9 twist barrel.

Lever was the only one with any stock a few weeks back. I had called Royal and they said they had no .223 in stock. So I went to Lever to pick up the 45 gr JHP to see how it works. Since I used it for the Tac Rifle match with nothing over 100 yards, they performed really well. In fact, when I zeroed it at 25 meters, they were dead on point of aim.

I did get a 1,000 rnd off Lever with the 55 gr. but when I saw the 45gr at Walmart, I was surprised that they were half the price of Lever.

AR15.com just separates the brand and the reaction of the users which is either in the 'POS' category or 'I love it' category. No data like velocity, if it tumbles at certain feet after it leaves the barrel , or doesnt work with my 1:9 twist barrel etc. Besides, the ammo in the states seems to be a different brand than the ones we have over here. I keep seeing the Winchester Q3131 brand which does not appear in the Lever Winchester 55 grain box.

Any other reaction ?

Thanks for all your reply

If you can get Winchester 62 grain FMJ, it's item USA223R3 and the bar code is 20892 21313. My understanding is that this stuff is made in Israel by IMI and is military grade, it's crimped and has the sealer on the bullet.

This stuff was bought at Le Baron in Ontario @ $5.94 per 20. I'm sure a bulk purchase may reduce this.

Acccording to The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide by Walt Kuleck, the 1:9" 50 to 69 grains will work given that the 1:9" is the most versatile.

Le baron does have a web sight and I believe does do mail order.

gushulak, yes they are that fast out of the longer barrel(model 700VS) actually faster around 3675-3700 if iirc
and for whatever reason they shoot 1 inch higher at 100yds than every 223 i tried

This is not mil-spec ammo, only the Winchester Q3131 is made by IMI and is mil-spec, all of the USA brandname codes is .223 and SAAMI pressures, not the mil-spec stuff that we all want. I've talked to the Winchester rep in a gunstore recently and this stuff is not available in Canada, Winchester is supplying all of it to troops in the field.

On the other hand, I am suprised to see that the longer barrel does in fact get it going the speed they have advertised, thanks for the info! :D

This is a Winchester white box with made in Israel marking on it. This ammo does not look like any of the other white box Winchester ammo that I have 55 or 62 grain made in USA. You can see the sealer at the neck of the brass.

i've always used 55gr or heavier loads on my AR and have never tried the 45gr stuff... but i get great performance from the 55gr and up stuff and at about $5 a box its fine by me...

these are the American Eagle stuff, and lately i've been getting even better performance from my last few boxes of AE .223, it turns out that they are all LakeCity headstamped? not sure if that's why they seem more accurate...

2katz,

"This stuff was bought at Le Baron in Ontario @ $5.94 per 20. I'm sure a bulk purchase may reduce this." 62 grains .

WOW ! That's cheap ! Any dealer that offers that price here in Vancouver will surely have an out of stock situation in a few days.

I wil chrono the 45 grains and the 55 grains next week on the holiday weekend and post the chrono results and how it groups.
