Difference in guns?

Trap guns usually have longer barrels are often set up to shoot higher. Trap targets are rising and the purpose of the high shooting gun is so shooters can hold the barrel a little lower and keep their eyes on the target. Trap guns with fixed chokes are tighter than skeet guns.Roger M said:

If you are only going to get one I wouldn't get either but get one set up for sporting clays. They are half way in between the two. Generally a little bit longer and come with choke tubes. Sporting guns are set to shoot flat or maybe a touch high.
I have two sporting guns (o/u and a semi auto) that I use for all the games. If I were to get serious about trap I'd have a dedicated trap gun but I'm just as happy using my sporting gun for those times I shoot trap.
Just to add to what Claybuster already said so you have some kind of comparision besides "flat" and "high". Most flat shooting skeet/field guns are said to shoot 50/50 or 50% of the pattern above the point of aim (POA) and 50% below. Most dedicated trap guns are set up in the 70/30 range or 70% high of POA but I see guys shoot them as much as 100% high. Most sporting guns I've patterned seem to be about 60/40. They are basicly just a fancy field gun with a little less drop in the stock which causes the 10% rise in patten impact. Some of the guns out there have an adjustable rib that allows for an adjustable point of impact (POI) but your getting into big $$$ there.
