just curious how much of a difference in quality there is between leupolds vx II and III's, and whether it is worth the extra expense?

The VX II is a variant of the Rifleman and VX I. The Rifleman is essentially similar to the old Vari X II with some different external appearance. The VX I is similar but has Multi Coat 4 coatings on the outside lenses but has the same friction windage and elevation adjustments as the Rifleman. The VX II is similar again but has click adjustments and Multi Coat 4 (this is the coating used on the VX III) on all lense surfaces. Now the VX III is a different scope completely as the lenses are mounted in a tube that is inserted in the scope body. Besides using the the Multi Coat 4 coatings they are index matched (don't know exactly how they do this) that achives 98% total light transmision form the objective to the ocular lense. The essential improvement over the VX II is better light transmission and more robust design. Also the resolution is improved. You can only get the Boone & Crocket and Varmint Hunter reticle in the VX III's. The VX III also have finger tip adjustments for windage and elevation. Hope this helps. Phil.

VXIII you have more then the Boone & Crocket and Varmint reticles. you can get,
-Duplex
-Heavy Dueplex
-Wide Duplex
-Heavy Target
-Fine Duplex
-Leupold Dot
-illum. Duplex
-illum. Circle Dot
-illum. fine duplex
-German#4
-illum. German#4 Dot
-1/2-MOA Target Dot
-Varmint Hunters
-Boone & Crockett Big game
-Target Cross Hair
And it depends on which type of VXIII you get on with reticle they come with
VXII only comes in 1". VXIII 1" and 30mm. Plus the VXIII has a number of othe options the VXII does not.
Im not sure on it but i think the VXIII index Matched lens system is instead of the multicoat 4 lens system.

IMHO there isnt enough differences between the two to make me want to go out and buy VXIIIs

I love the 3-9x40 VXII, and the 4-12x40 VXII.

I also have a FXIII, which uses the same lenses as the VXIII, but due to it being a fixed power scope, its price isnt as high as the VXIII.

I guess a guy should just buy the best optics he can afford, and go with that. VXIIs are great scopes though...;)
