Hi all,

I have a WTB in the EE for a Leupold FX-3, and have been offered a scope where the golden ring on the objective reads "FX-III". I know there are differences between Leupold's variables vis-a-vis the older roman numerals (VX-II) and the newer arabic numerals (VX-2), but my Google-fu is failing me to see if there is actually and difference in the fixed offerings.

Are the newer FX-3 scopes actually marked "FX-3" on the golden ring? If so, is anyone familiar with what differs between an "FX-III 6x42" and an "FX-3 6x42"?

Much appreciated!

The difference between the FX111 and the FX3 is mostly in lens coatings and some small tweakings similar to the differences between the VX111 and VX3. Unlike the V three series I don't think the F three series got the upgraded erector assembly springs, so the differences are mostly in the Diamondcoat 2 and Xtended Twilight lens system. The difference is there, but not earth shaking. Enough that I personally wouldn't go out searching for an old one to save a couple bucks, but not enough to sell my Fx111 and replace it with a new one. They are both startlingly good optics. Fixed scopes are like that.

Enough said.To the point.LOL

I agree! Thanks for the information, Dogleg. The only other difference I noticed between the FX-III and FX-3 is the available reticle options. In my case, I really would like an LRD reticle, so that rules out the FX-III (or getting Korth to change the reticle, but that would be a wash on any savings). I think the FX-3 is the way to go... at least I can order off the shelf.

My only vent is to the marketers at Leupold for the silliness in renaming their scopes. Not everyone is aware that there is a difference e.g., between a VX-II and a VX-2, and I've received pictures from sales of VX-2's that are actually VX-IIs. Pretty easy to get wires crossed and purchase something that you weren't expected. Anyways, that's the end of my rant :)

Thanks again for the great summary of the differences. I've not eyed through the FX3 6x42, but it seems to be very well-regarded... I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Love my FX-3 6x42 with the LRD.
I can see some clarity but mainly low light improvements over my FX-III 12x40AO.
I wished I had a picture of my dad's face when he looked through my 6x42 for the first time.
He's had the same Leupy on his rifle for 40 years and still holds p.o.a. year to year, but the clarity of mine was great for his aging eyes.
