Got a question for you .45-70 shooters.... I haven't tried the newer Hornady .458" 350 gr Flat Pt bullets yet , are they made to expand more quickly than the regular 350 gr Round Nose?.. Seems like they would as I noticed a difference on the jacket nose , serrated lines....I have used the RN ones in the past , they seem pretty tough at 45-70 velocities....
So , what have any of you found with these newer FP bullets?

Thanks
Bob

I have not shot game with the flat points yet, but out of my #1 or guide gun 45/70 at around 1800 fps they hit in the exact same point at 100 yards.

If I recall the fn open at 1200fps and the rn 1600fps? To be sure email Hornady and they'll tell you, (I did, I just forgot). I've used the fn and rn a bunch of differnt game, deer, bears, moose, with my Marlin 1895G. I haven't recovered a bullet yet as both seem to penetrate well. The fn seems to leave a slighty larger wound channel than the rn on deer size game, the rn just doesn't open up enough unless it hits bone. Both bullets have broken shoulder bones on game and they keep on plowing. I load them pretty hot (max) with 57gr of H322 for 2000fps out of my gun, its a pretty good all around bullet/load for the 45/70, certainly gives you out to 200yrds with plenty of wack!

btw I ended up sticking with the fn for the added expansion on little vancouver island deer. Amazing blood trails...

Cheers
