Question for M14 owners:

Is it normal for different kind of ammo to shoot 2-2.5" higher than
the other one. That is on 50 yrd range.

I shot Winchester, 150 gr X-Super it shot right on.
When I put Remington 150gr, UMC, it shot 2-2.5" higher (consistently).

If that normal? I went back and forth between the two ammos,
and the result was the same. X-Super shot lower than UMC.

Shouldn't the same weight (grains) shot the same?

Is there something wrong with my rifle?

Yes you can have what might be generally the same ammo spec do different groups. Nothing abnormal here. You will find that different loads, different powders, primers, brass, bullets will make a distinct difference on performance. Not all ammo is made the same.

You might also consider when you shot the second batch of ammo. Was it quickly after the first box? The barrel was hot and that will affect where you shoot.

Irregardless, try several manufactures, if you don't reload, go with the one which groups best.

Just a note: It's not just about ammo, you can have different groups in different weather conditions, humidity, rain, snow temperature, wind, etc. All factors affect bullet's flight path.

I can't comment on M14's, as I've found all the ammo I've tried to have pretty similar trajectories, but I certainly have seen this with bolt action rifles. According to the guy at Hornady I spoke to, even two exact same velocity loads can produce a different point of aim if the powder is different, as it will produce a different barrel harmonic and thereby a different place the barrel is pointing at the time the bullet leaves the muzzle.

Thanks guys.

It just show me that there are many factors in getting
consistent shots. A good rifle is only one of them.

It just sucks to adjust ACOG for each ammo I use.
