Heya

Has anyone witnessed first hand the difference between two different boxes of the Same ammo...
I purchased 2 box from the same store, but more recent purchased a single box from another store 600km away, So of course they are different "lots" of ammo, while i was shooting this morning i put a round of the new box through the rifle to hopefully confirm a POI.... It did appear to shoot higher but that was only 1 shot, an It seems my shooting is not be bench Rest quality.

hence the thread to see if someone with very good shooting skills has noticed any difference between batches of CF ammo, especially those on the 06 sized cases.

cheers

Different lots of ammo, use different lots of powder, primers and sometimes different bullets of the same weight.

Handloaders will run into this phenomenom with different lots of powder and primers. The bullets themselves, as long as they are the same number, don't seem to make as much difference.

Even within the same box of ammo the rounds can be inconsistent. I had 4 rounds of federal premium accubonds and even with just 4 rounds the weight spread was 3 grains. I suspect it would have been much higher had I went through all the rounds.

I took a closer look today.

The numbers of the Lot or Batch on the box, were Close, down to around 160-180 although have a different Letter at the front.

Unless you buy the ultra premium ammo the cartridge to cartridge consistency isn't the best. As said above there is the lot to lot differences in powder, primers, brass, and bullets as well as lower quality control so bullets seated to slightly different OAL's and a larger tolerance for errors on the powder charge (nothing dangerous but still there).

Shooting cheap factory ammo I find I'll get at least 1-2 flyers per box of 20 that is over 1" off at 100 yards. Flyers in premium ammo (the stuff that is 3-4x the price of the cheap stuff) are much more rare and often the entire box of 20 will all group together.

Shooting my 44mag lever I sighted in with a box of factory ammo. The second box of same ammo, bought at a different time and a different lot number, shot almost 2" lower at 50 yards. That seemed huge to me but neither showed any signs of abnormal pressure. I have since switched to all handloads for all my rifles; no more factory ammo at all (except when it's given to me for free and then it's just for plinking and to recover the brass.)

Well more to add to this issue...

From the beginning, i normally use 140gr Accubond Win supreme, rifle was Zeroed for them.
i then sussed 150gr Federals as stocks were low all across the board in 140gr ABs, without Trying outhers settled on the Feds, Which ended up shooting like schit in my Rifle. an POI was 7 inches LOWER an 4-6inches to the LEFT.
I just cracked open the Box of Winchester Super X 130gr bullets, an the POI was up near the AB's, So that is 7inches Higher than the Federal 150 RN...

Cant believe how much lower those Feds shoot......

spewing i wasted time an money an potential trophys by stickin with those Feds!!! argh they shoot like crap in my Rem 700!!

Hopefully thats the end of the Ammo dramas, an time for the kill shots!

Bit of an update to this thread,
I just got in from shooting the super x ammo, ive almost done the first box still Effin around with the rifle, pulled stock off an put er back together after a clean an inspection an put some rounds on target...
I also tested the Question i asked to a degree, i shot the 2 boxes of super x i had at the same target an both hit where they were suppose to, incl my shooter error.

interesting.

still left the federals out, with the wins i got around 1.5 moa which i fine.

cheers
