Different scope larger groups?

Not sure if this is the right forum but I'll try.

I have a Savage model 25 in .223 with a cheap redfield 3-9 On it.

I wanted a scope with a bit more zoom so I spent 300ish on a Vortex Crossfire scope. It seams that since I have mounted this scope groups went from about 2" at 200yards to 6".

Is this quite common and do I just have a lemon scope?

Did you get an adjustable objective model? if so you may not have set the Parallax properly.

A scope has nothing whatever to do with group size. A scope will not make a rifle that doesn't shoot well already more accurate. They only let you see the target better. Mind you, a big heavy scope can cause you to wobble more. So does too much magnification. Shouldn't make any difference off a bench though.

Everything is tight. I remounted it with no change to the groups. The rings were 70 bucks so I am assuming that is not the problem. I think I am going to mount the old scope again and see if the groups shrink

Did you lap the rings? If they aren't true ,and are torquing the scope, erratic groups could result.
