Dikar-Made 45 cal Mountain...?

My sweet wife bought this for me for Christmas. She overheard me talking with a friend about how fun it would be to spend an afternoon around a campfire making lead balls and firing them off.

A buddy at the local shop sold her his... a Dikar-Made thing from Spain. I happen to know she got dinged $450 for it... I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth, I'm just worried she may have paid too much for this thing. I know a Traditions is about $300ish on the used market and these seem comparable.

I don't know enough about them and can't really find anything online. Just one thing from Europe, but that is kinda apples and oranges.

What do you lads think?

Cheers!

She got ripped off for $450. Bad. $200 tops market value. I would be very cautious about that gun shop in future. That said, she meant well and you'll have lots of fun. Some of the junky spanish guns, while ugly, can shoot well. Score some FFG black powder, a roundball mold, roofing/plumbing lead and you're off to the races. Developing skills and making mistakes on a gun like that will do you well when it's time to upgrade to a Kibler.

Yeah, I figured as much. From a guy who we've fed dinner multiple times, had stay in our spare bedroom multiple times, invited to our cabin, taken baked goods on a regular basis, dragged deer out of the woods together... he was damn near family at one point.

Brutal.

His wife decided she didn't like me a while back. She's rather controlling and doesn't like people getting too close to him. She's pushed all his friends away.

But I didn't think he'd do something like this to my wife. My wife has never hurt a fly. She's the one who takes him baked goods at times.

This will be screenshot and sent to him, I'm hoping he will make it right by just buying it back.

Over double market value, wow.

Maker was likely Jukar - possibly the early maker that has now been re- named Traditions. Barrels were usually quite good but the locks were problematic especially flinters. I understand there are drop in locks available from Dixie/ Track of the Wolf source if you have problems. Real value IMHO around 300- maybe a bit more. Shoot it and enjoy it - nice to have a wife that does that for you, get her shooting it as well. Regards

Thank you man, she truly is a wonderful woman.

I'm a little pissed as the guy that sold it to her calls himself a friend. He should know better than to try and pull a fast one on me. He's the local gunsmith and I've taught HIM shyte about firearms ffs. He knows my knowledge on the subject is vast, just not in the category of black powder.

He'll be waking up to a screenshot or perhaps even a link to this thread.

A very odd move on his part as we are both part of a tight knit group of hunters that spend most Fridays together after work cooking and having beers at the shop.

Before you go burn any bridges, bear in mind that he may not know the true "market value", you consider yourself rather gun savvy and you don't. He may be under the impression that he gave her a smokin' deal. Also, before taking the "true market value" from the opinions of people on a forum (you only received 2 opinions so far and the second one is 50% higher than the first), search out ACTUAL prices that they have sold for and add that information to any opinions you receive here and from all that, form your opinion.

You take me for a fool. I've had this thought as well, of course. Actually it was my first thought!

I am "rather gun savvy" buddy. I have bought and sold
over 300 firearms, including a black powder or two. I have a pretty good jist what crap is worth... hence being here with my suspicion that $450 was high enough to be worth posting about it. As soon as I saw the thing I figured $250. not bad for a neophyte eh?

Times are tough, you'll notice my iTrader activity has fallen off a cliff here. So when my wife clearly saved up for months to buy this and gets ripped off, knowingly or otherwise, I get a little annoyed. Especially when I guessed it's market value at a glance. And especially when in was from someone who works in a gun store selling used guns every day and someone who could have done a little research himself instead of a shot in the dark at what it is worth... especially when that individual calls himself a friend.

I appreciate what you're saying, but I'm well ahead of you there.

Ps. I clearly stated I tried to find prices online and only came across something from Europe.

Pps. I'm not going to go down there and stove his head in. I'm going to take the rifle down there and plop it on his desk, tell him we can't afford it, and walk away. I don't expect him to have $450 on him, he can save up.

Ppps, he should know I already have a Cap-lock, my guest bedroom is also a gunroom. So he slept next to the damn thing more than once. It is actually mounted on the wall next to the bed away from all the others lol! So you really can't miss it.

There's a lot here my friend... but I do appreciate your concern for my friendship. I think that ship sailed long ago. This is just business.

Everything is higher in today's market. If the gun is nice I think it would fetch $350.00 to someone depending on time of year. Those Spanish barrels were usually quite accurate. Of course condition is everything. But $450.00 would certainly be top value. It would need to be like new including bore.
Actually reading the original post again I see it is a mountain rifle. What caliber? Some might not agree but there is a bit of a following for the old Dikar/CVA mountain rifles with the two barrel wedges, especially if 54 or 58 caliber. But he is still on the high side if 45 or 50 caliber unless like new.
Can you post a pic?

She's like new, two wedge.

He had a tag on it for $550 apparently.

I am going to assume an honest mistake. He is exceptionally lazy, I'm friends with the store owner and he laments this individuals work ethic quite a bit. So I'm not surprised he didn't do any due diligence :)

I'm just going to tell him we cannot afford a new hobby right now, especially when I already have a 50 cal Hawken in the herd.

We need a pressure washer for around the house instead of a new toy. My wife will understand, and probably be relieved.

It is the thought that counts.

I did not, not even a little bit, but after reading your latest post I do now.

My apologies, I missplaced my "mind reading" head band somewhere with my decoder ring. Sorry for trying to help.

Wow, I was quite kind in my response to you. I thanked you for your concern, looked at it from your perspective, and yet you negatively respond.

A little sensitive my guy.

Take it easy out there.

I totally agree with Sainsbury: some of the barrels on cheap Spanish guns were very good. If there is a problem it will be with the lock. I fixed a messed up lock for a young friend a few years ago; the gun cost him $150 and once we played with the load I could put 5 shots in one ragged hole off a bench at 50 yds.

I appreciate that man, truly. Thank you for the info.

Luckily I got the ol Savage to buy it back for what he charged my wife.

I would like to aquire a flintlock. For some reason that is far more appealing to me than a cap lock.
