How much variation in case overall length are you getting?

Edit: I am using mixed brass that was randomly fired from different chambers aswell.

Hey there! I got mine a little under a month ago, and when I first received it, I was less than impressed, regarding the variation in case length. Originally, on my Dillon 650, I was using a Lee Universal Decapping Die in station 1, with the Trimmer and trim die inserted into station 4, set up to full length resize (as confirmed by a gauge), and trim. Variations in case lengths using this setup were plus or minus 7 thou, or there abouts (this was for .223, so as low as 1.743 all the way up to approx 1.758 or so. Not too huge, but wanted it tighter.

After doing some reading, I swapped the lee die out for a full length resizing die, and installed it to decap, and FL resize MOST of the way, but not all. I find the trimmer to be INSANELY accurate now, and am super happy.

With regards to the heating up of the motor, I have yet to find a resolution for this, although, I find if I run for half an hour, I am out of brass to trim anyways, and can find something else to do while the trimmer cools down. Others on some different forums have talked about opening up the vacuum shoe which fits around the trimmer die to allow more air flow when the trimmer is on, but have no experience with this method.

The FL die in station 1 helps take the play out of the tool head, also case lube plays a big part in consistent FL sizeing... Cases don't get longer because you bump the shoulder back down, they grow when the expander is pulled back thru the neck... No expander in the neck then it's gotta be slop in the tool head... Does that make sense?
 
macsailer, I'm using an RCBS lube/decapping die and I notice that there must be a variation between all the brass I'm running. As sometimes it's easier to size than other brass in the batch. Some push hard some push soft. I'm only getting a variation of +/- 4/5 thou so I guess I should consider myself lucky.

I don't know if I'd want to be sizing twice though. as I need to lube but I'll try getting another die in before the trimmer/FL sizer.

Hotwheels, I'm using a Hornady LnL.

Ahhhhh... Well then...

Did you get the LNL bushing shim from Hornady for the dillon 1200?

You might not have slop in the tool head but you might in the carousel on the AP, add more dies to spread the load out or tighten your shell plate up a bit... That's all I got for ya.

1) DC motors run hot, nothing to be done about it and nothing to worry about. I wear gloves when reloading anyway.

2) my trim-length standard deviation (SD) is 0.000857", which means that 99.7% of my brass will be within +/- .0026" of nominal (all else being equal). Two things I am doing right: sorted brass - Winchester - and uniformly generous amounts of lube. If you get a marginally-lubed case everything springs more and the cases trim longer. Mixed brass makes the SD about 20% greater.

Not using any shims or anything fancy - just loading on a LNL AP. And I make sure the Dillon lockrings are firmly in place, as they don't have a locking feature like Forster / Hornady / etc.
