I have a 650, my son has the 550 and is having difficulties that I can't seem to solve. I have never used Dillon dies. His dillon sizing die in 38 SP. has this spring loaded decapping pin. What's happening is the decapping pin will not eject the spent primer reliably. The sizing part of the die is adjusted correctly, sizing the case sufficiently. The spent primers are ejected everywhere except in the spent primer cup. (when they do eject). They fly off at every angle imaginable, except straight down into the cup. Is there supposed to be a plastic tube from the bottom to the spent primer cup to keep them headed in the direction of the cup? I've read the instructions for Dillon pistol dies, and the very thing this spring loaded die is supposed to prevent, is actually occurring. The die was taken apart cleaned, the decapping pin was inspected, measured against a new pin. It is the same length. I don't know why it won't decap reliably. This is a new machine with less than 500 rounds produced without problem. I'm going to try a Lee sizing die in it tommorrow. Any thoughts on what's happening?

not sure if this is your problem?
if it is a older set of dies, I have heard that the bottom of the pin gets rounded and the primers stick on the end if the pin

fix = replace pin
or
Stone the bottom of the pin to get rid of the round part ..... = ...square edge

Usually you just grab a bit of sandpaper and round the pin to stop primer suck back. If that doesn't do the trick than try an offset point similar to a hypodermic needle.

Here's what's happening:

As for the primers not hitting the cup. I had to slightly modify my spent primer chute to stop the occasional rouge primer.

P.S. The Dillon sizing die must make contact with the shellplate. Make sure all the stations (or as many as possible) are filled before tightening down your dies, this will ensure that they remain centred.

Perhaps you have your decapper set out too far? On the upstroke when the decapping pin comes into play, if there is extra length, the spent primer is decapped, but the stroke is not all the way finished. So the extra length propels the spent primer wayward instead of into the direction shield.
Dillon makes great equipment but I employ LEE carbide sizers/decappers die because they are better.

My fix was to take a bent Dillon decapping pin, remove the pin and file the dome square. Use Lyman decapping pins - smaller and cheaper - then reassemble.

Thanks for all your answers. I bevelled (rounded) the pin, seems to have eliminated the problem. The pin was squared on the end, as was the brand new spare pin in the die box. There is no adjustment for the length of the de-capper. I looked at the end of every make of sizing die I have, and in all cases the pin was rounded on the end; even in brand new spare pins I have. Only the dillon pistol dies have squared off pins. There rifle decapping pins are rounded.
Again thanks for the replies. And the problem of spent primers hitting the floor was solved by freeing up the spent primer chute which was stuck in the open position and wouldn't move.
