The main difference between the two:
- 550 is manual index and 4 die stations
- 650 is auto index and 5 die stations
Generally the 650 will load more in an hour than the 550. You will get varying opinion on how many rounds an hour are possible, so it all depends on how fast you want to go.
I have one of each. 650 is dedicated to 308. 550 loads many pistol calibers.
You say "I don't know much about reloading.." I urge you to start with a single stage press and add the fancy press, later. Your learning experience will be better.
I think one of the main features that I thought was really good in the XL650 is the station for the powder checker, expecially being new to reloading. Not that it makes up for being dilegent in checking my rounds, but I like the idea of having a backup safety system in place.
I started to load on a progressive. Seriously, it's not a big deal. The 650 is not complex at all. Just take your time, it's an awesome press. Switching caliber is not that hard and it can be done under 15 minutes.
