So, the dillon 550 has four spots for dies... originally intended for.

1 Decap/resize
2 Bell / Charge
3 Seat
4 Crimp

The dies I am using Seat and Crimp with one Die.... meaning I have an open spot now.

Does anyone know if I can use the dillon powder check in the open spot?
Their website says it is only meant for the 650 & 1050 ??

Yes I was thinking about seating and crimping in No. 4

But yeah, with some more research the audible check that I wanted would require some pain in the arse mod's to make it work.... the 650 and 1050 have a hole in the toolhead specifically for this.

More and more I look at it...... good ol' light and eyeballs is prolly my best bet.

PS, I dont think it would be THAT hard to seat and crimp in 4. Just place your bullet in 3..... then index.... (Unless the click shifts the bullet out of the case)

How would you check the powder with the bullet already seated? It would be a compete PITA to seat and Crimp on the 4th station! Unfortunately, there is no easy way of doing what you want on the 550

I use an RCBS lockout on my Dillon 550, for loading 45s, and am very happy with how it works.

The only difference in procedure is having to place the bullet on the 4th station rather than the third, and while it is a little fiddlier, it is a fiddle I am willing to live with for a mechanical powder check.

I would think that it would be problematic with a longer case (say 357 mag or longer) as you have to reach over a piece of brass, but I can't say for sure, neverhaving tried it.

What variation in powder charge is it able to detect? +/- 0,2 gr?

mmmmmmmm

I guess I will have to try that one and let you know how it works.....

I load 9mm, .38/.357mag, .45acp and then some rifle too.....

So I will let you know how it is with a longer case...... now I just have to find one.

As for the accuracy and power difference it is able to detect... I am not too worried cause I am mostly concerned with Squibs and double charge. Small variations arent as much of a problem and I always spot check my powder weight throughout.

It isn't a precise measure, and I doubt it would detect less than a couple of grains variation. I'll test how sensitive it is and get back to you.

It was easy enough to find: I bought mine at Lebaron's.
Let me know how it is with a longer case.

Sensitivity of an RCBS Lockout Die

It appears that the die is more sensitive with a smaller case, and less powder, which stands to reason, and that it varies with both case and powder, which also stands to reason.

Powder WC107/case R-P 45 ACP, 4.5 grain window (i.e. passes anything between 7.5 grains and 12 grains for a target charge of 10 gr)

Powder Win 296/case IMI 50AE 6.0 grain window (i.e. passes anything between 27 grains and 33 grains for a target charge of 30 gr)

Interesting... will it be really useful for 9mm as we are talking about couple grains diff between min and max loads

I just bought a 550B and called up Dillion and the 550B is not made for the Dillion Powder Check Die.

I bought a RCBS Lock Out Die. Works good and no need to look at the "white line/indicator". If there is a squib load or double charge the lock out die will prevent the press from completing the up stroke.

Station 1 - Sizer/decapper
Station 2 - Dillion Powder dropper/bell
Station 3 - RCBS Lock Out die
Station 4 - Seater/Crimper

So, I tried to do some shopping this weekend for this lockout.
Went to Wholesalesports and Bass Pro....... both places looked at me like I was crazy. (Might have been because of the makeup and tutu)

Any places in/around Calgary that sell this? Is it only going to be an online purchase?
