I finally tried to fire up a SD that I bought some time ago. I changed it from 45acp to 357. And yes the primer slide into the small one. I went through Dillons videos. I measured the cup height and it's in spec. I've adjusted the screw above the spring till the primers would pop out of the cup and then in the opposite direction till they would barely seat. I went the and lub'd it as per their video. I changed primer brands, winchester to CCI with no change. Tried to use CIL, but the filler tube didn't like them. Several different case brands as well, including zinc. I've emailed Dillon as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Clint

No, i cut into the bench for it. Yes x 3 How does the sf rod effect it?....i'll double check that rod.

I had some issues recently. 5/100 high (or low, depending on your perspective)

All Winchester brass. Snugged up the shell plate a little and things have run well for 600 or so rounds. I had cleaned up all the filings under the shell plate prior to that loading session and don’t think it got the torque it needed.

Used a SD for years and never had any issue. If you are only ever going to be loading pistol rounds, then no need to get a 550. I would definitely contact Dillon again before doing anything drastic.

If the Square Deal is like the 550 primer arm there is a set screw on the side of the arm that holds the primer plunger. If it backs off and releases the shaft the primer cup will not push up the primers into the case. The cure is to unscrew the set screw a turn, depress the cup and hold it down. Tighten the set screw and you should be back in business. If the arm is different phone Dillon.

Don't waste your time with a Dillion SQ ... send it back to dillion and trade it in for a Dillion 550... you won't be sorry.

So you think he should ditch the progressive for a manually indexed press because of a primer seating issue? I have a Super1050, you should ditch your 550 for a 1050, you won't regret it, if you can afford one.

Looks like I was "short stroking" it. I started to exaggerating the upswing and it seemed to fix it. But then it started a bit again. I'll look for that set screw. Seems to me the cup seemed not just right when I flipped from large primer

Thanks
Clint

Clint there is a grove in the stem of the primer cup that the set screw tightens into. If it loosens it the primer cup will not push the primer fully into the case. I have had that happen to me on the 550B. After a few hundred thousand rounds Dillon replaced the primer arm. Again I am assuming your primer arm on the Square Deall is the same as on the 550B. If it is then loosen the set screw, depress the cup as far as you can then tighten the set screw. It will help if you have a third hand. I found if my tongue was pushed into my left cheek as I swore it helped.

I finally got back to this. It appears it needs a little extra squeeze at the top of the stroke. As long as I stuck to giving it that little bit extra at the end, it seems fine. After the next batch I'm going to strip it down again and have another look

Thanks everyone for your ideas

I’ve got about 1000rds through since re-torquing the shell plate with no further issues as well

I sent my. square deal b into dillon when it was flipping primers.... they completely rebuilt the entire unit under warranty. all I had to pay for was the shipping. done a thousand round since then with no issues. the sdb has been a great press!
