***update***
So all it took was one phone call to customer service to resolve the situation...I simply convinced them to exchange the defective rifle they shipped to me with a replacement of the same model at their cost. I received the new rifle in the mail today. After a close inspection, no defects are readily apparent with this one, at least no visible defects on the crown as with the last rifle...although this version arrived with a Remington branded "Supercell" recoil pad, not the R3 recoil pad I was expecting...now all I have to do is scope it up and see how it performs...I'm thinking of going with Leupold one-piece std base, Leupold low height std rings in matte, and top it off with a Leupold Vx-II 3-9x40.
As a side note, I also recently received my factory Remington fall promotion rebate cheque in the mail from Agence Gravel out of Quebec for $30., bringing the total price for the rifle down to $569.99 before tax...not bad!!!
