Took the Benelli Ultralight out today for pheasant during our snowstorm...probably last hunt with it this year..Had a blast. Anyhow got it home, broke it down and wow were there some dings in the walnut. Nothing major but I have found when after almost all my hunts I come home with a small scratch or dent. For me an $1800 shotgun is alot of money and hate to see it dinged but alos like to go hard and stuff happens. So do you guys that do alot of shotgun hunting baby your guns or just go hard and if a ding happens..no big deal??
 
Its an inevidable factor when using your shotgun.
I hunted quite a lot this fall with my newly acquired BSS (1981 vintage) and see plenty of marks in the hi gloss varnish. Personally I dislike the gloss finish, so this winter I am going to strip down the varnish, smooth out the bumps and somewhere find TUNG OIL and do an oil finish.

I find a rubbed oil finish does not show the wear like varnish does.

Buy used and live with someone else's s'periance?
Or add yer own karakter?
Take the gal out back and tune her up with a chain or something.
Wear the new off her and don't look back.
 
Just a fact of life for a hunting gun. Every 5 years or so I remove the finish and steam out the dents and refinish with Tru oil and start again, gives me something to do in the off season.

I use Old Masters pure tung oil. Can't remember where I found it. I believe Lee Valley handles pure tung oil. Stay away from Fornbeys as it is a tung oil finish containing only a small amount of tung oil and mostly varnish.
 
Every mark kills me but I am an anal fool and wonder sometimes who am I keeping them mint for. So much so on some I put the wood stocks away and put syn on them or buy a cheaper version and let that one take on the trees.
Brownings have to be the worst for showing marks.
