I bought 2000 rounds of American Eagle 40 S&W ammunition today and it looks like reloads. Factory box, individual boxes are crisp and new looking but about half the brass is dirty, as if it has been once used.
Does anyone know if Federal uses once used brass in the production of factory loaded ammunition?
I've purchased tons of ammunition over the years but I have never seen this before.

I've grabbed the odd box that seemed less than clean. This has happened recently as well.

I'm not a big .40 S&W shooter so usually I'll only grab a few 50 round boxes here and there. About a month ago I grabbed two boxes, some of the brass in the one box was dirty/greasy almost scorched looking, it fired no problem.

I just grabbed a few boxes for a shoot this weekend and again some of the brass is dis-coloured, greasy or whatever. I don't mind but the product isn't consistent as it usually is with Federal American Eagle.

i`ve had this happen with winclean some of the rounds had some corrosion rings on them, they still worked fine rings stayed there even after a trip in the tumbler for reloading.i don`t think they use once fired brass for new ammo but there is a reason AE is one of the cheapest ammo`s out there, and in my experience one of the dirtiest firing. if your looking for inexpensive factory ammo you should try CCI BLAZER i found it less expensive and cleaner burning than AE.

My 2 cents.

I was visiting Hornady factory down south a month ago and what they told me that every round gets inspected manually and I saw this with my own eyes, the girls working at QC are very fast and dirty + dented ammo get rejected , and the staff shoots that ammo, BUT if somebody comes (and I am not accusing anybody) and they want to buy the ammo cheaper , they will sell it and since there is no copetition in CANADA between handgun ammo retailer, well the customer will buy it.

Makes you think.
