Dirty Media

some guys throw 3 or 4 bounce our swiffer sheets in with their brass when tumbling it....it captures all the fine particles that chip off the media and any stuff that comes off your brass...including nasty stuff like powder and lead residue. suppose to keep your media usable longer....not sure if you have to use it from day one or you can use it to revive used media.
 
I literally wash my media in the bathtub (when the wife is not home). It's messy, and takes some time, but comes out clean, and lasts forever.

A little wax to freshen it up, and good to go. All my brass looks great, and I have been using the same bag of crushed walnut for years, and thousands of cycles through my tumbler.

I find it best to have two batches on the go all the time, one being cleaned and drying, and the other being used.

I find the dryer sheets help to keep the dust down in the room your tumbler is in.

Can I ask How you do this? eg.just let it soak or??? also what do you use as a soap if any???

I cut up a used bounce sheet in 4 or 5 strips for every load of brass I tumble and it is black when the brass is done I use crushed wallnut

I just throw in the whole used bounce sheet. It always comes out black! :)

Normally I place the media in a plastic bucket, and run water into it, while mixing it around. As long as the bucket is deep enough, and not very full, the media stays near the bottom, while the fine crap gets washed away with the fresh water. I let it run for a bit, then mix it up, let it run again (low pressure) till it's clearer, then mix it again. I do not pay water where I am, so that might help. :)

Once the water runs fairly clear, I drain it, and let it dry for a few day. Then stir it around again, to dry further. Works great.

Less fuss to buy a big bag of crushed walnut shells/corn cobs from a pet supply shop. It's sold as small pet bedding. A 40 kilo bag runs less than $20.

That is exactly what I use, but in the time it would take to go to the store, I can clean my current media. Just a swish here and there, let some water run a bit, then let it sit to dry. Not much fuss at all.

Reduce REUSE Recycle??

Won't somebody please, think of the children! :)

That's funny coming from someone who is washing lead powder down the drain!:p
 
Mike I was waiting for a story like "I throw it in the washing machine and put it through a cycle and catch it coming out the pipe in the laundry tub".
Ah well next time.

I use "used" cling free sheets cut up in 2 inch squares. Almost any fuzzy rag with help clean media.
 
The bounce sheets seem to be working but my wife didn't appreciate it when I told here I needed more and she better start doing some laundry ....:eek:
