Just got an e-mail from my PH that the guy who issues gun permits for the Congo, went on holidays until mid Oct. with out doing my permit. He has had the application for 4 months, but just never got around to it before his month long holiday from his obviously very busy and highly stressful Gov't job, there in the Congo.
Bottom line is...I now cannot use my own .375 for the hunt. Very distressing, gotta love Africa and all those hard working gov't officials who work so hard to smooth the way for us to come and drop 50K in their country.
Needless to say I'm a little pi$$y about the whole situation and just posted this to vent to a hopefully more sympathetic audience.
Non hunters and local hunters just don't get it when it comes to hunting far away and how important it is to use the rifle you trust and have worked long and hard to get the perfect load for it. Then some 2 bit lazy Gov't official doesn't get around to doing your paper work for 4 months.......AAARRRRRGGGGGG !!!!!

Wow that would piss me right off too!! Incompetence and you get to pay the price. Well here is to hoping you kill some fabulous animals and I cross my fingers for you that there is a silver lining here somewhere. Good luck to you and I can't wait to see the results.

Send your rifle as a gift to your PH and then borrow it for the hunt. Not sure if you can do that but It might work????
good luck on the hunt.

Not sure how I'd feel about a trip like that where I didn't get to us MY OWN gun...

I'm a stubborn SOB, staying home would be on my mind & the PH can deal with the repercussions...

Cheers
Jay

Wow. Not good. SOP over most of the Dark Continent though.

There was the time I sat on me arse for two weeks in Arusha, waiting for a mining permit. The problem?, Tanzania's seat of federal government had no paper to print it on. Nor, a single sheet to had in town(?). The road was washed out, and no heavy equipment or transport available. My personal blank paper? ... not acceptable ... not "issued".

Perhaps you can pull your bullets, remove that :p"extra";) bit of powder that no doubt found its way into your loads. They may then work just fine in the outfitters 602.

Small consolation, I know.

I could do that, but I doubt I would get my 65K back, so probably not in my best interest to be quite that pigheaded.

Whatever are you talking about..."extra powder"... in my pet loads? I'm sure I have no idea what your talking about ;)

"Extra", would that be the powder I couldn't get in the case, even with a 6 foot droptube and my vibrating case tray?

Seriously though I use TSXs so no way to know if his .375 would group or pattern them. I've found rifles to still be finicky with these homogenous bullets.

Negative on that, as I leave Mon a.m. and he wouldn't be able to get the permit either as "THE MAN" who gives them out is on holidays.

Can your PH not buy a new gun? Tell him what you want & use it for the hunt. Then buy it & export it back home... (I am completely unaware of the laws surrounding this issue in Africa, just hoping there is some way for you to use your own gun...)

Cheers

P.S. Stay safe!

See your point.

Got any 300gr NP's on the shelf?.
Speaking from limited experience here, but my 602 shoots any old 300 grainer quite well with 79-80 grains of H4350. Fed 215m. Seated out to 3.750". You could perhaps seat long for now, and bring along a Lee hand press and die, then set OAL to the borrowed rifle's specs in Africa.

A pity, but that paltry amount of powder won't require more than 18"'s of drop tube and a mild crunching in the seater. ;)

In any event, we all know you will make the best of the situation.
Good hunting Mate.

Like everyone opining on this forum says, "it's not the rifle that matters, it's the man behind it" I sure hope so.

Jay, it is my understanding that you cannot buy a rifle in the Congo, so it doesn't matter who shows up at the border still have to have firearms entry permit, PH doesn't live in Congo he lives in Pretoria RSA so he is subject to all the same requirements I am.
It sucks but I can still use my .375 for the lion part and that is what really matters to me as they can bite back, the Congo part is antelopes and dwarf buff so it's not THAT big a deal really, still irks me though.
It has been suggested to me there may be a way to do it, but it would mean flexing the rules a bit............I'll let you know when I return...IF I return!!
If you guys don't here from me by the first of Nov start sending care packages with files and hacksaws in them to me at the Brazzaville Federal Correction facility in Brazzaville, Congo :(:D

Charlie.......The bit of extra cash part would probably do it all right, after all it is Africa. They get really pi$$y if you give them attitude, ask me how I know this.

Nah, don't screw your PH over because of a Congolese bureaucrat. That said, if he cancels someone will get a wicked cancellation hunt deal!
