I'm a total sxs noob and I have this old Baikal 12g with internal hammers that has a loose stock. The stock keeps coming looser from the receiver every time I shoot the thing, so I want to take it apart and see if I can indentify the problem. I dont want to just rip into it just incase I do something incorrectly. I've removed 870 stocks before but Im not sure where I should start on this sxs.

Also the stock is cracked (seems kind of common for used sxs's), should I bother trying to repair this one? Or can I find replacement stocks somewhere for it?

Thanks

Not sure what model you have, but most boxlocks secure the butt stock to the receiver using a through-bolt that goes through the middle of the stock, from a channel behind the butt plate to the receiver. Generally, there are a couple of screws to remove the butt plate, then a long flat-head screw driver (properly known as a "turn screw" to gunsmiths) is used to remove the through bolt.

Be careful when applying force to the turn screw because, if it slips off the through-bolt while you're applying force, it can come right through the side of the stock (the stock is quite thin at that point).

The whole butt stock will simply slide off once the through-bolt is removed. But, be aware there might be additional screws going through the stock from the trigger guard tang, for example.

The crack you speak of should be repaired. Cracked stocks can split suddenly when shooting with potential injury to face or limb in the process. Usually all that is needed to repair a crack is epoxy or ordinary white wood glue. Sometimes it's necessary to cut a channel into the back of the crack to allow more glue into the area. Gluing the crack shouldn't be difficult. Refinishing or doing an invisible repair to the visible exterior is the hard part.

When replacing the through bolt, be careful not to over-tighten. This is what causes many stock cracks. Instead, install a lock washer, if one wasn't already present.
