Just picked up a SA .38 Super 1911A1, new to me but not. It has a cone type compensator and to take this gun apart I have to remove it from the barrel. I am assuming that it is screwed on (looks like it) and needs to be screwed off. The problem being it is really ON and I'm not sure how much force I should be applying. Is it reverse threaded? Do I need the help of a GS? It also has after market recoil spring and guide...not sure how those come out either. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a compensated 1911 and the comp stays attached while disassembling the pistol. Your guide rod most likely unscrews. Remove the guide rod so you will be able to rotate the barrel bushing. Draw back the slide a bit and remove the bushing, spring guide and spring. Then remove the the slide like normal. Reassembling the thing is a bit of a biatch and almost takes three hands, but with practice it has become bearable. Your comp is unlikely to come off without major work or cutting in spite of being threaded (they are designed to stay put). Hope this helps...

With a cone type compensator there is usually no bushing and there is a reverse recoil spring plug. A method of disassembly might be, remove the slide, barrel, recoil spring as one unit then remove recoil spring and guide rod out the rear of slide , remove reverse plug out rear , then fold down link and slide barrel out front of slide. MIGHT WORK.

Close. Questiion is whether you have a 1 or 2 piece guide rod.

One piece ones have a small hole that you can only see when the slide is locked back. A bent paper clip is inserted in this hole so that the length of the paper clip lies along the rod. When you move the slide forward the paperclip keeps the spring compressed. then continue on as Bearman said.

If you have a two piece rod, (usually has a screwdriver slot or allen key hole on the exposed end of the quide rod) loosen, but do not completely unscrew the rod while the gun is still assembled. Remove the top end from the gun. Holding your hand over the inside end of the guide rod(to stop the spring from flying across the room  ) finish unscrewing the front half of the rod. It comes out the front, the back half and the spring come out the back. Again as Bearman said, fold down the barrel link and the barrel/comp will slide right out the front.

These are the two guide rod configurations I am familiar with. I hope I did a half-ass job in explaining them properly.
