Hey guys I was curious about this since I received this rifle. The bolt carrier has been discolored since the day I saw this rifle. It's a '92 colt hbar sporter. It apparently had less than 100 rounds through it when I got it from the father n'law and I've since put about 1500 through it.

I have had absolutely zero problems with this rifle but have been curious about what happened to the finish. The bolt is like new so I can only assume it's the surface treatment of the carrier that's the issue. I've since replaced this neutered version for a colt m16 carrier and retained the originsl bolt in it.

My guess is the lubricant that was used and being stored for 20 some odd years probably caused some kind of oxidation.

Yeah pretty much this, it won't effect the actual steel, just how it looks though. Could bead blast it and coat it again if you wanted it pretty?
