So, i drove around some Farming property which is mostly hilly Cattle country which backs onto some Pine plantations, in Unburnt areas local to me, alot of Fallow deer were seen on the way in, i stopped to grab some photos after seeing a dozen in groups here and there either side of me as i drove up the valley 'track' .

Such a great sight too see the Golden grass glowing in the Golden sunshine of the morning which pronounced the golden tinge the Fallow deer of this area have. a beautiful sight after visiting many blackened burnt out scenerios of recent weeks :(

i didnt want to shoot one out the window, although i did grab the rifle more than once, reminding myself that i wasnt here for the kill, although the morning was dedicated to getting some Meat for some camping bbq meat, steaks, medalions and of course to try this new dehydrater out on some jerky!
after my recent video which went somewhat viral in terms of australias hunting community an beyond, preeching to leave the fire effected deer and areas somehat alone, i wasnt there to boast a youtube video about my morning either, i wanted to be in the bush chasing deer, on their terms.

so i parked my ute and grabbed just my rifle, the number 1 303 and raced off down the recently logged pine block into a gulley of natural bush and up the other side to a mates fence line.
i could of wrote a book about how not to hunt , initially.. i guess im somewhat accustomed to recently walking fast covering miles on burnt country with dosile deer, these fallow however could see this black duck a mile away as i meandered down the bulldozer trails..
so i thought i would go an sit on a fallen pine stump in the middle of the block an watch the fence line, within seconds of walking off i see a deer broadside 50m away fully alert- like a rookie i take my eyes off it and crouch down, covering meters to a point where i could see better and get a rest on fallen stumps... yer right.
id say i was 40 seconds all up, you bet the deer would of been out of there in the first 5!

i had to laugh at myself, really... how desperate for meat are you really? you just drove past 15 deer in the paddocks to get to the back gate 45 minutes later, to walk down here and royally stuff up an 'easy' deer...

withing minutes a young buck appeared from some standing pine an trotted along the ridgeline to the cover back in the mates side of the fence.. too far without binos to see easily until in motion..no dramas, not here for a buck.

i follow the fence back, looking for antlers wich may have busted off during summer, no luck an back to the Ute to get to the actual back Gate, so i could walk down a track in the bush.

alls good, 150m in and im day dreaming as the sun rises over the mountain, bark, A lone hind standing on the Track infront of me.... HELLO WHELANLAD!?!?!?!

i freeze and raise a rifle, adjust the scope and wait, suns in my scopes direction, looks like a foggy winters morning after breathing on the scope addicently.
shes alert an bounds a few strides and stops to see what i was, i stepped to my right and found her as the tree shaded my figure- 7x @ 40m as she angled toward looking downhill at me, i confidently squeezed the rugers nice trigger and bang flop.. Success, on foot, in the bush as per planned.

i walked back 200m to get the ute, opened the gate and drove in, dragged her down , loaded up, spun around and went back to my hut, loaded up and headed into town.

Happy Days!

As none of us can really determine or predict what happens to a projectile once it leaves the barrel I would say that this could be a combination of many factors.

I have also had bullets drop onto the floor with merely rifling damage , I particularly remember a .308 bullets from a mule deer. You could of reloaded the damn thing.

IMO , it was a bullet moving on the slower end when it impacted the target and the target essentially worked as a cushion with the varying layers of biology until it stopped.

Freakish results none the less.

I bought a bunch of Speer grand slams bulk years ago. 7mm hole in, 7mm hole out. Never recovered one I’m asuming the lead core was too hard, they performed like a FMJ. Thankfully we recovered both animals.

Wtf? That's very bad! And I usually think of Sierra bullets as "soft" !

Well it was a while ago near end of Winter, when i had this bullet work flawlessely on a Sambar stag which was bordering maturity, heavy enough animal alright, hit him in the sweet spot unde the arm and found the projectile perfect mushroom on the other side. so i figured i had a beaut "Whitetail/ Fallow deer" bullet, capable of the bigger deer when needed...
well. maybe fallows r tooo soft LOL jokes.

On the bright side, looks like you can just clean the blood off, reload it, and use it again.

a little squished making it oval 9.3, i feel like it nicked the neck enough to go under the skin, grab the bullet as it exited and tumbled into the deer body cavity from there
