So, ordered an new "tacticool" stock for my SKS. Everything was going great, even got my bayonet off w/out any problems despite it being welded/hammered into place. All that good fortune ended while trying to get the pin out of the hand rail...

Don't have a punch so I tried a screwdriver, nails, allen key, pretty much anything that looked like it would work. About an hour later I gave up after breaking off a little piece of the hand guard metal and deforming the pin to all hell. FML! Ended up having to order a new one online. Figured you season veterans of the milsurp world could use a laugh... For the Newbies, I have alas become a cautionary tale of doing stuff like this on your own w/out proper tools.

If by hand rail u mean gas tube cover, it's actually a revit, and not a pin, thus u can't simply hammer it out. You have to dremel or drill the expanded ends of the pin( basically making it a rivet). Then hammer it out.

it actually a taper pin , that all you just need to hit the good side to get it out if it not too mushroom , you need a punch and a hammer it not easy that why some people just drill it

I just did 3 afew months ago and prob about 7 in my life time. One end is mushroomed out. So it only comes out one way.

Take it from experience, soak the handgaurd pin down in a cup with 3 in 1 for afew hours or overnight before you even bother hammering. It just needs to be enough to soak the pin, a pop can all cut up propped up in a corner should work, or a solo cup or whatever u have.

I put a punch through my finger trying to get mine off. I then took it to high caliber as they're close to me and I was done trying. They simply drilled the ends a touch to break it free and then popped it right out with a punch.

Here is a tip for basic tools. You clamp it in a vice, tap one side a bit but stop before you damage it, flip and reclamp, tap the other side a bit. This side to side action will loosen it up so repeat it until it starts favoring to come out one side and by then you can knock it the rest of the way out. I've done a few like this and it works for really tough ones when you have nothing but a vice hammer and punch.

Never work on anything, whether its a firearm, car, motorcycle or your house without the proper tools.

This.

What the OP did is just hte sort of stuff that prevents me from becoming the next owner of his firearm when he's done messing around with it.

Consider this a hard-learned lesson and invest in the right tools next time, or pay a real gunsmith to help you.

Good thing it's a cheap replacement for a cheap rifle with readily available parts. Live and learn, no biggie. The way some people talk here it's as if every time someone alters an SKS it's like cutting the last tree and catching the last fish.

ive lost count how many ive done. I usually use the dremil and remove a bit on the sides, then a REAL GOOD PIN PUNCH and hit it hard the first time. most of them move some, then grind it off what has come out with the dremel and push it back through the other way. only had to actually drill a couple. they are a simple soft pin that is crushed or pressed in then ground off.
