Dissapointed with the M&P 9

I have put 500 rnds through and this is where I'm at. I guess my mind is telling me not to retrain, it just feels wrong not to flip on the safe before the holster and since I liked my .40 s&w 1911.( I should never have sold it.) The trigger still feels wrong but that's probly cause the 1911 had an Armco trigger job. I think I will stick it out for now and get it to atleast 1000 rnds to give it a fair trial. I found a Hogue handall grip that I will try. Then I might trade her off.

Order the Apex comp kit if you want a better trigger pull. It makes a huge difference I hear. I shouldnt talk though, I sold my M&P 9mm too. lol. I had trouble with the slide not locking back cuz of my thumb too. Some say train, I said new gun. The M&P is still the only pistol I have shot to this day that I have/had that trouble with. Smith should move the slide lock lever further forward or redesign it in my opinion. I shoot competatively and was sick of adding time because of having to power stroke when I shouldnt have too. Plus, in my opinion you want as high as a grip as you can get on a pistol. Keeps the muzzle flip down. There's no way in hell I was gonna retrain my thumb just for the Smith when on every other pistol I own/have tried my grip works fine. I may get another striker fired polymer pistol one day but for now, I like my all steel SA/DA's. Newest addition is the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. What a great gun for the price. Great trigger right out of the box, even better with a 13-15 pound main spring. I think youd be hard pressed to find a better stock trigger pull in the price range of the Shadow.

I might trade her off.

I've found firearms to be very similar to golf clubs. When you find "the set" you'll know it very quickly ;)

My custom ground and tweaked KZG Z0 Forged blades were the same.
Within a bucket...I knew.
On the 2nd set and still nothing comes close.

What's right for one may not be right for another. Perfectly normal.

It gets gooder :D but the lack of a conventional safety throws me off as well. I was even thinking about having one retrofitted but I'd rather put money toward a 1911:eek:.

You might be better served with an M&P with a thumb safety - it'll give you somewhere to put that thumb. The trigger will never be an Armco tuned 1911 though - I have one and I've had the comp kit from Apex and they are not comparable (very few things are), but the "carry kit" trigger is a nice 4lb trigger, after the take up.

I guess the design with the M&P and lack of a separate, manual safety, is that the striker block (safety) prevents the striker from moving forward to connect with a primer, even if dropped by the sear, unless the trigger is significantly depressed. With the latch on the trigger, the trigger can't move rearward unless pushed rearward. It can't be pulled rearward by the trigger bar.

I give up.

I gave the m&p about 600 rounds and I still couldn't convince myself that I liked the polymer frame and trigger feel.So away with that in comes the Armco tuned Sp-01. I think that should suit me a little better I hope. I have handled but never shot a CZ (mostly 1911 experience) so hopefully this gun lives up to my expectations. With so many good reviews and competitors using them they must be pretty good.

If you like 1911's so much, why are you straying from them? You can get a 9mm in 1911.

The cz75 and sig226 platforms are excellent all-around guns.

I know what you are going through, I bought a beautiful cz97b that I couldn't shoot straight for some reason... some platforms work for some, not for others.

Got my apex ram kits in. To note though the Vtac don't accept it due to different block design. The pro now however with comp kit and ram is an entirely different gun no kidding. Comp kit feels great on vtac to however the ram really makes a clear crisp reset on pro. Apparently Apex is also working on a ram kit for Vtacs block design.

If your looking for 1911 trigger feel many seem to swear by Apex new FSS kit as soon as a CDN vendor carries them I'll try one but for now the Apex parts are truly a HUGE improvement over stock, seriously BIG difference!!!

For me I repeat 'front sight, front sight....' over and over in my head while making a shot. It keeps me focused on the front sight and not focused on anticipating the shot going off and makes me take my time.

YMMV

Throw some snap caps into the mix when loading your mags...you will then find out how much you flinch.

Too bad you didn't shoot the CZ before the tune. IMO may not be worth the extra out lay (especially since CFRAM has the Shadow for $739).
Shadow triggers are great stock and easily user tuned with mainspring changes..

I felt exactly the same after shooting a buddy's. The grip thing is definately because you're used to a 1911. I don't know why the M&P 9 seems snappier, but I find it as snappy as my P944 and that's a .40. I'd give it a few hundred rounds AND an open mind then if you still don't like it, trade it.

My CZ75b is snappier than my Sig226. CZ is heavier (top heavy), maybe that's why. I find the Sig226 to be perfectly balanced. To each his own. Shot the M&P, Glock, don't like them. Now that I have the Sig, the CZ is being sold to a fellow gunnut.

Everyone is different, maybe the ergonomics of the M&P is ill-fitting for you.

for my m&p i have small hands so use the small back straps, also they get a tad sweaty after a while so the gun moves. the solution for me was skateboard grip tape laser cut to fit the grip proper. i have a solid grip now worked on trigger pull tip of the finger works best for me. the snapcap trick works too for seeing a flinch. I suggest to get someone else to load the mags so you are not expecting the snapcap to come up.

For Christmas I got an M&P 9 range kit and I have found myself oddly Dissapointed. I did my research, handled the gun and I managed to shoot the .45 version before buying but I still have found that I struggle with the gun. It is moving around in my hands with recoil and the trigger is frustrating. Also,As I have only really shot 1911's any real amount I have had issues with me causing the slide to fail to lock back with my natural grip dragging on the slide or my thumb resting on the slide release. So now what?

Anyone else share these frustrations? What did you do about them?

i had the same issue, well the other way around that i started with polymers (M&P9) but once i started shooting 1911, the M&P just felt wrong - the trigger is a pissoff if you prefer 1911 style

That is an easy fix, buy and install the FSS kit, in speaking with a friend who put in the FSS kit into his S&W he says it nearly replicates his 1911 trigger pull and feel on throw and reset. ;)

I am straying for the beloved 1911 simply because I want to have variety. Maybe there is something out there that will be so amazing I will forget the 1911 even exists.... Unfortunately my married college student budget doesn't allow for me to buy one from each manufacturer, my wife is very understanding but I still have limits. I decided to get the Armco tuned pistol because I have had an Armco 1911 and I know the difference it makes.

I think I will try the snap cap trick. Might reveal alot about my fundamentals that I'm not willing to admit.

FSS Kit? Haven't heard or seen those initials anywhere... would you please elaborate?

Apex Tactical. I just installed one for a friend of mine. The trigger kit gives you virtually no pretravel, a very fast reset and about a 3.5# trigger. It isn't a 1911 trigger but it is close.
